Semi Finals Wrap

The first round of finals for Wimmera Hockey was held in last Saturday, and the match of the day was the qualifying final between Yanac Tigers and Warracknabeal Hoops. From the hit off a large crowd of spectators were captivated by the pace, skill, and intensity of the match. The Hoops held the advantage in the early stages with numerous attacks on goal and were unlucky not to score. Tiger Kim Croot, however, changed the momentum with a bullet that burst through the back of the goal cage, lifting the game to another level. The Hoops answered through Al Crozier a few minutes later and it was 1 all at half time. The second half was very tense with both teams having opportunities. The Tigers having the most, but these were just missing or kept out through the defence of Steve Laverty and Nathan Kent. With the game locked at one all and nearing full time, the Hoops lost key player maker Cameron Bardell, who received a yellow card. This may have been telling, because with less than a minute remaining Kim Croot struck again and the game was over. The Tigers team play and their amazing ability to play out the whole game were again major factors in deciding the outcome.

The Hoops will now play Kaniva men next week in the preliminary final. Kaniva, who are in their first season in the competition, eliminated Horsham Hurricanes 1 nil. From the outset Kaniva were the more determined team, winning most one-on-one contests. It is remarkable the progress they have made this year. Mat McDonald was best a field scoring the game’s only goal. Both defences were solid, Alan King and Reily Sanders standouts for Kaniva restricting the number of shots at goal by the Hurricanes to a trickle. Clint Beattie pulled off a remarkable save in the dying moments that would have evened the scores. Steve Grose, Darren Barnett, and Paul Mackareth, as they have been all season, were the Hurricanes best.

Warracknabeal women, who seem to know how to perform when it matters, go straight into yet another grand final with a strong win over Nhill Thunderbirds. An even first half saw the scores nil all at halftime. Warracknabeal, however, gained the upper hand in the second half and won thanks to two goals to Suzanne Puls.

The Thunderbirds will now play the up and coming Horsham Highlanders in the preliminary final. The Highlanders beat Yanac in a game that saw the momentum swing throughout. With only patches of fluent play, it was the Highlanders that looked more likely to score, with Ellie Morrow dangerous up forward. She scored the first goal and set up the second for Louise Lang who was well positioned on the post to tap it in.

The junior’s elimination final between Warracknabeal Revengers and Kaniva Raiders went to double over time. With scores locked at one all and only minutes until the game would have gone to penalty flicks the Revengers scored a second goal and won the match. Nakita Langman and Peter Aitken scored the goals for the Revengers. Jordan Clark scored the Raiders only goal.

The Revengers will now take on the Kangaroos next week in Kaniva. Nhill Leopards defeated the Kangaroos 3 nil. Best for the Leopards were Natalie Jones and Oscar Stephen. Kangaroo defenders Beau Lovett and Ben Gebert where their best.

Round 18 Review

Final four positions were decided on Saturday in Warracknabeal in warm conditions.

Kaniva Raiders secured forth place with a strong performance against the Horsham Black Hawks. The best Raiders were Claire McDonald and Kendal Meyer, with Braden Clark scoring 2 goals. The highlight for the Black Hawks was a great solo goal to Andrew Valentine.

The Raiders victory meant the Nhill Bandits could not make the finals regardless of the result against the Warriors. The Bandits have performed well all season, and it is a shame they had to miss out on finals action. Jarryd Bendall controlled things in the middle as usual and was ably supported by sister Lauren and Ben Smith. The Warriors perhaps played their best game of the season drawing 2 all with the Bandits. Erin Blackwood again very solid in defence. While Alex Wheaton provide attacking and Adam

Horsham Highlanders also secured a finals birth with a convincing victory over second placed Nhill Thunderbirds. The Highlanders running and long passing game was too hot for the Thunderbirds, winning 3 nil.

Kaniva women’s only hope of making the finals was a Highlander loss. Knowing they couldn’t make the finals, Kaniva were very determined to end the season on a high note. Kaniva dominated the first half of their clash against Yanac with accurate passing to forwards from the half backs, resulting in many shots at goal. The second half was more even, but it was Kaniva’s Sharon Williams who scored the only goal from a loose Yanac pass.
Warracknabeal beat Dimboola women 4-2 in the other women’s match to finish the year on top of the ladder.

In the men the Yanac Tigers were impressive coming back from a 2 nil deficit to beat Kaniva 4-2. While the Hoops had too much fire power for Dimboola winning 4-1 and finished the year on top of the ladder.

Round 17 Review - Yanac

Hockey returned to Yanac on Saturday. In a great game of end-to-end hockey the Nhill Leopards defeated the Kaniva Raiders 3-1. Brady Newcombe got the Leopards off to a good start with a very skilful goal and it was Leopards 1, Kaniva 0 at half time. The highlights of the half being the long runs into the forward line by Tom Cook and Adrian Creek and the clever play by Sarah Wallis and Natalie Jones that set up the runs.

Early in the second half the Raiders struck back with a goal from Brady Dixon and the game was very much alive. Tom Cook scored 10 minutes in after a great individual effort off a short corner and then scored again giving the Leopards a winning lead. Raiders Mat Wallis goalie made some terrific saves in goals and was ably assisted in defence by Roey Sanders and Tim Eastwood.

In the women’s competition Nhill Thunderbirds consolidated third spot on the ladder with a closely fought 1-nil victory over fifth placed Kaniva. The first half saw several quick runs into attack by the Wallis sisters only to be spoilt by the defensive skills of Claire Ritches for Kaniva. At half time it was nil all. The second half continued much in the same vein; however Laura Wallis managed to score a lucky goal, and Kaniva were unlucky not to score an equaliser at the death from a short corner.

Bottom placed Dimboola women had a 1 – nil victory over second placed Yanac. Again showing the closeness of the women’s competition. Michelle Searle was again very good for Dimboola as were Marli Sallman and Vicki Smithyman, with Adeni King scoring the lone goal. Best for Yanac were Erin and Anne Blackwood and Sarah Coughlan.

Horsham Highlanders held top team Warracknabeal to a 1 all draw. Both teams were determined not to give the other any advantage leading into the finals. In a gritty match in wet weather Horsham led early through a goal to Kate Ferrier but were pegged back by Warracknabeal late in the game by a Suzanne Puls goal. It seems now that a draw in the last round will be enough for the Highlanders to hold onto fourth place. They are 2 points and a goal difference of 4 ahead of fifth placed Kaniva.

Horsham Hurricanes got over the line in somewhat of an upset win against the Warracknabeal Hoops in a very close men’s game. A very determined Hurricanes got off to a good start and led 2-nil half way into second half. The fitter Hoops then started to have more of the attacking play and scored a goal with about 10 minutes to play. The Hoops continued to push forward but their momentum was thwarted by a strong Hurricanes defence led by Lochie Zordan and Jarrod Knoop.
Dimboola men surprised flag favourites by matching the Yanac Tigers for most of the match before losing narrowly in the dying minutes of their game. The score was 3-2 Yanac’s way, but this and other recent results must give the young Dimboola men’s side a lot of hope for next season.

Round 16 Review

Highlanders continued there good form with a dominant win over Dimboola women in Horsham on Saturday. The Horsham Highlanders have been on the bottom of the ladder for most of the season, but a string of good matches has seen them break into the four.

On a well prepared field the skills of Highlanders Kate Ferrier, Launa Schilling, and Ellie Morrow were on show. Fuyuko Lehman got the Horsham women off to a flier. Awesome teamwork up forward gave the Highlanders a 4 – 1 lead at half time. The second half was closer, but the Highlanders were always going to win through great teamwork. Best for Dimboola were Michelle Searle and Jess Ross.

Kaniva women’s great effort to hold top side Warracknabeal to a draw went unrewarded as they dropped out of the four for first time this year. Warracknabeal had many more shots on goal, but just couldn’t get it through the strong Kaniva defence. Their respective defences have the least goals scored against them this year. Defenders Julie Langman and Jenny Ford were best for Warracknabeal, while Hannah Bedford and Rachel Clark were Kaniva’s best.

The Thunderbirds managed to hold onto third place with a good 2 nil win over second placed Yanac women. Holly Kennedy providing the difference scoring both goals for the Thunderbirds.

In the juniors the Leopards regained top spot with a return to form. The Leopards had many avenues to attack with six different goal scorers and a characteristic tight defence led by the talented Chris Jones in goals against the Kookaburras. Tom Cooke, Natelie Jones, and Oscar Stephen were all in great form for the Leopards.

In a crucial match between two form teams, third placed Revengers and fourth placed Raiders, saw the Revengers come out on top. Revengers dominated winning 3 nil. Ethan Schilling and Nakita Langman led the way for the red hot Revengers. Best for the Raiders were Liam Wallis and Claire McDonald.

Wet weather and a determined Nhill Bandits kept the potent Dimboola Kangaroos attack to just 2 goals. The Kangaroos lost top spot despite winning, their percentage of 571 is just below the Leopards (627). Best for the Kangaroos were Beau Lovett and Kelly Smithyman. While Jack Janetski and Lauren Bendall played well for Nhill.

The Black Hawks with two goals to Andrew Valentine defeated the Bombers in clash of the two Horsham junior sides.
In the men the hoops and Kaniva drew 1 all, while Dimboola and Horsham also drew, the score was 2 all.

Round 15 Review

Wimmera Hockey games were played in Warracknabeal on the weekend, with some surprise wins and close matches.
In an upset, up and coming Warracknabeal Revengers scored a win over top side Nhill Leopards. Leopards had been undefeated all year, and it took the determined Revengers to show them up. Ethan and Cassie Schilling were the scorers for the Revengers, whilst the Leopard’s sole goal came from best afield Adrian Creek. The Revengers defence of Simon Bardell and Nakita Langman were the stars of the day, keeping Leopards forwards such as Natalie Jones, Oscar Stephan and Tom Cook away from the action. However, the Leopards defenders Alannah Creek and goalie Chris Jones also played well to stop the fierce Revengers. This was a very even match, with close shots coming from both sides, but in the end it was the Revenger’s day, scoring a much deserved win.
Kaniva Raiders got to work straight away in their match against Dimboola Kookaburras, scoring early. However, Dimboola defence of Luke Searle and James Keating held off the attack, until near half time, when Raiders scored again through Jordan Clark. Kaniva continued to dominate for the second half, with Dimboola goalie Coby Villis getting lots of work and making some spectacular saves. Kaniva used the ball very creatively around goal, with a fantastic goal coming from teamwork between brothers Brayden and Jordan Clark. Jordan ended with three goals for the match. Dimboola were very gutsy in defeat, but Kaniva had the match from the outset.
In the men’s competition, a close match between Tigers and Hurricanes saw the Tigers steal the match through accurate shots and making the most of their opportunities, to win 4-1. The goals were evenly spread within the Tigers team, with the best players being half backs Luke Reichenbach and Mick Dart. Paul Mackereth was the best for the Hurricanes, scoring their goal, whilst defender Richard Kemp was the best at keeping the Tigers hunger at bay. Tigers sit quite comfortably at the top of the men’s table this year and don’t look to be really challenged in the finals.
In the women’s competition, Dimboola women scored a surprise but well deserved win against Kaniva. Jess Ross scored the only goal for Dimboola and was also instrumental throughout the game in setting up many attacking runs. Kaniva had a majority of the play throughout the match, with forwards Claire and Lauren McDonald attacking well, but were unlucky not to score. Hannah Bedford once again played an outstanding game for Kaniva. Dimboola’s backs Michelle Searle and Naomi Kuhnell combined well in the half back line, whilst goalie Cassie Curtis was solid against a threatening Kaniva attack. This win should motivate Dimboola, who are unfortunate to be on the bottom of the ladder.
In another women’s match, Horsham Highlanders were determined in their win over Yanac. The match was played evenly with great passing and teamwork on both sides. Highlander’s Kate Ferrier was a key player and her goal in the early part of the second half boosted the Highlanders. However, Yanac’s Sheree May had a comeback of her own and the teams were once again even. With some encouragement from Robyn Creek and Lorna Schilling, Highlanders continued to fight and Lorna scored to put Highlanders in front. Sarah Coughlan and Anne Blackwood played a fantastic game for Yanac. This is a confidence boosting win for the Highlanders, who could be very dangerous if they make this year’s finals.

Round 15 Preview - Warracknabeal

All matches are at Warracknabeal this Saturday. The pick of the matches is the Leopards Revengers clash in the junior competition. The Revengers will be looking to make an impact on the powerful Leopards outfit and consolidate a final four position. Tom Cooke and Oscar Stephen are in terrific form and should make things very difficult for the Revengers.

In other junior matches Nathan Jorgensen of the Kangaroos and Kendal Meyer of the Raiders will be keen to add to their already impressive goal tallies.

The Dimboola women probably lost their chance to play finals this year when they lost to the Highlanders, and tomorrow’s game against Kaniva being their absolute last chance. The Highlanders will be hoping for an upset however, and for themselves to beat a strong Yanac team.

The Thunderbirds play an important game against Warracknabeal in the other match which will also have a bearing on the finals.

Maybe it will come down to the last home away match as it did last year to sort out which teams make the finals.

Kaniva men play Dimboola in what should be a good match. Dimboola were impressive against the Hurricanes last week. Both teams have reasonable defences but struggle to score going forward. Kaniva perhaps have more to play for with the finals just around the corner.

And the mighty Yanac Tigers play a Hurricanes team that has been in patchy form in the final match of the day.

Round 14 preview

This weekend’s Wimmera Hockey will be split between the grounds of Dimboola and Kaniva. The day starts with a showdown between the two Nhill teams, Bandits and Leopards. History shows that Leopards should win, as they are unbeaten this year, but if anyone could beat them, it is the Bandits. Bandits have many skilled players such as John Schwartz, Morgan Heenan and Tim Braendler who will be fired up to play their Nhill counterparts. However, Leopards have a formidable line up of players this year with threats in the forward line such as Oscar Stephan, Tom Cook, Natalie Jones, Sarah Wallis and Jayden Newcombe, who have all scored over five goals this season. This is sure to be a tough game and although it looks to be going the Leopard’s way, it will be all action until the last whistle.
Other junior games see the Horsham Black Hawks take on the Yanac Warriors. When these teams played earlier in the season, it was a break through win for the Black Hawks, but with both teams having improved, it will be interesting to see who’s on top this time. Black Hawks have some improving players including Elly O’Connor and Will Lehman, who are showing more capability as the year moves on. However, Warriors have really lifted their game, keeping top side Leopards to only four goals last week. Erin Blackwood and Alex and Jess Wheaton are consistent every week for Yanac and with their help, Warriors could secure an encouraging win.
In the men’s competition, movers Kaniva men are playing Warracknabeal Hoops. Kaniva come off a hard fought draw with Hurricanes last week, whilst Hoops are off a five-nil thrashing from Tigers. Kaniva will be hoping to keep going their uphill run, whilst Hoops will be regrouping after a disappointing loss last week. Christian Stimpson and Alan King will be putting in their all for Kaniva, whilst Hoops have experience in Cameron Bardell and Steven Laverty.
The women’s games will continue to be close, as bottom teams Horsham and Dimboola fight it out for fifth position. Both these teams could possibly still make the finals, but will need some more consistent, decisive wins if they are to be any chance. The main difference in the scores will be determined by who is the most accurate near goal. Kristen Klinge and Adina King will most likely be firing for Dimboola, whilst Horsham will look to Ellie Morrow and Molly Salter to convert. A win this week would take Dimboola from the bottom of the ladder.
Also in the women’s competition, Yanac will take on Nhill Thunderbirds in a contest sure to be even. Whilst Thunderbirds have a few disappointing losses in the last few weeks, they have a fantastic line up of players such as Ebony Stephan, Bonnie McLeod and Laura Wallis, who, if functioning well together, make up a formidable team. Yanac, however, have players such as Sarah Coughlan, Jill Kube and Anne Blackwood who all are instrumental in their team’s success. This game will be decided on which team wants the win more and it looks to be extremely close, if not drawn.
The other games see Dimboola men tackle the Hurricanes, Warracknabeal and Kaniva women fight it out, Bombers take on the Raiders and the two junior Dimboola teams, Kangaroos and Kookaburras face each other.

Round 13 Review

Nhill put on a great show on the weekend for the Super Saturday round of hockey. It was not only the usual players, but some rather small stars, which got into the action. However, the presence of these Minkey hockey players didn’t spoil the usual hockey excitement and fierce competition that characterises the hockey in the Wimmera.
The Horsham Bombers broke through this week to record their first win of the season. Kim Trounce was best afield for Bombers, scoring the winning goal and attacking well throughout the game, and will be a dangerous player into the future. Bombers scored early and it was great defence from goalie Matt Tepper and half backs Monique Schwedes and Jordyn Pizzoni that kept the determined Kookaburras away. Luke Searle and Michael Pohlner were instrumental in the Kookaburras defence, whilst Shayman Villis helped to create attack for the Kookaburras. In the end it was the Bombers on top, with finally something to smile about this year.
In a surprise win, Kaniva Raiders trounced the Bandits 6-1. Raiders looked to be weaker this year after their premiership last year, but have grown together throughout the season. After a pretty even first half, Kaniva came out firing in the second to score 4 goals, which sealed the match for them. Both Jordan Clark and Kendall Meyer scored multiple goals for the Raiders and Claire McDonald showed once again that she is a real force in the half back line. It was the finishing skills of the Raiders that won them the match in the end, with only Lauren Bendall being able to score for the Bandits. John Schwartz was excellent in the Bandit’s defence.
Warracknabeal Revengers played superbly on the weekend to draw with second top team Kangaroos. Despite plenty of early pressure by the Kangaroos, which put them 2-0 up half way through the second half, Revengers dug deep to score two late goals. Eddie Aitken played a great game at half back for the Revengers, whilst forwards Josh and Rebecca McPherson pushed the ball determinedly into their attack. Kangaroos James Klinge and Josh Lehmann created some great plays, but it was Nathan Jorgensen and Clay Nuske who finished brilliantly, scoring for the Kangaroos.
Kaniva men and Horsham Hurricanes played an excruciatingly close match, with countless chances at goal being unable to be converted. It was a game played with hard hits from end to end, rather than midfield play, and it was the goalies, Kaniva’s Matt Wallis and Hurricane’s Steve Grose, who were the standout players for their teams. Kaniva seem to be improving this year, whilst Hurricanes will need a more solid, reliable line up if they are to be successful for the remainder of the season.
The women’s competition yet again saw some terribly close matches. The match of the round between ladder leaders ended with Warrack defeating Yanac by three goals. It was Yanac who started the match in style, with Mikaela Jago scoring early. However, Warracknabeal were determined, and with Alana Argent and Claire Cheesman at their best, were able to win fairly comfortably. Yanac’s half backs Sarah Coughlan and Mandy Falting were great in keeping the Warracknabeal score to a minimum. Warracknabeal seem once again to be coming good at the right part of the season.
The other women’s matches saw draws between Dimboola and Thunderbirds, and Horsham and Kaniva, showing the competition is still wide open in the rest of the year.

Round 13 Preview - Super Saturday

Super Saturday a.k.a. round 13 of Wimmera hockey promises a lot of nail biting matches. In the women’s and men’s competitions top place on ladder is up for grabs, and final four positions could rest on the outcome of most other matches.

Warracknabeal’s men’s side the Hoops have the chance to knock the Yanac Tigers off the top of the ladder. A position they have made their own since early last year. Despite some close matches the Hoops have not been beaten since round 2. With the continual improvement of younger players such as the Bardell brothers and the re-emergence of Shane Langman, the Hoops have the ability to cut through any defence. However the Tigers are not on the top for nothing and have strength all over the field. It should be a brilliant match.

Kaniva men meet the Hurricanes in the other men’s match. The Hurricanes have had the wood over Kaniva to date, but the games have been a lot closer than the score lines have suggested. Kaniva’s young brigade in Ben Schwedes, Clint Beattie, and Reilly Sanders will be keen to prove a point before an expected semi-final meeting.

The women’s top of the table clash also sees Warracknabeal play Yanac. Both teams are in good form. For Warracknabeal, Alana Argent and Jenny Ford are having a great year and provide much of the team’s drive. Warracknabeal’s better ability to score goals may be the difference in the end. Yanac also has many good players and will need Sarah Coughlin and Mandy Faulting to continue their terrific form if they are to be in it at the end.

The Highlanders will be pressing to continue their recent good form and keep the hope of playing finals alive. They play Kaniva whose form, on the other hand, has dropped a little in recent times. Kate Ferrier, Ellie Morrow, and Launa Schilling will be key for Horsham, while Hannah Bedford, Donna Meyer, and Rachel Clarke have been playing well for Kaniva. Both teams however have had difficulty in scoring and this is expected a very close match.

The Thunderbirds play Dimboola in what is expected to be another even, tense, and vital match. Much will depend on whether the Thunderbirds can put their best team on the field. The Thunderbirds were without key players last week and really suffered. Dimboola, who have been performing well against the top teams, will be hoping for a little bit of good fortune to go their way for a change.

In the juniors the Raiders and the Bandits meet each other in a vital clash. A win to the Raiders will probably put them in the four, whereas a win to the Bandits will consolidate their position of third on the ladder and make the road to the finals difficult for the Raiders.

In other matches forth placed Revengers have a tough job against the free scoring Kangaroos, but it should be a very entertaining game of hockey. The Warriors take on the undefeated Leopards so will be keen to impress. And the final match sees the Kookaburras play the Bombers, which should also be a close match, with both teams having a chance for a rare win. Cara Elsom and Jaime Guerin are playing good hockey for the Kookaburras and will have to be watched by the defence of the Bombers led by Josh Sykes-Atkins and Matt Tepper.

Round 12 Review

A major upset saw bottom of the table Highlanders beat premiership contenders Nhill Thunderbirds 5 nil. Indicating the evenness of the women’s competition but also surprising considering the two teams played a nil all draw just seven days earlier. An improving Highlanders team dominated play from the outset, keeping the ball in their attacking half for the majority of the game. Ginny Forrest was the multiple goal scorer with two. Ellie Morrow played an excellent game also scoring as did Carmel McFarlane and Jackie Zordan. Kate Ferrier was best for the Highlanders playing another excellent game and controlling things at centre back, and Robyn Creek was good in attack. Despite the score the thunderbirds worked hard in defence but were not able to keep the ball in their attacking half for long enough. Jeanette McLeod and Rosy Wallis were best for Nhill.

In another vital women’s match Yanac women had a good comeback win to defeat Kaniva 2 – 1. Kaniva led 1 nil at half time after a very even first half. Wide open play featured allowing many runs from both teams’ wingers and keeping opposing defences busy. In a tense and even second half it was Yanac who came out on top, with goals from Sharon Croot and Naomi Brick. Best for Yanac were Sarah Coughlin and Sheree May. While Rachel Clarke with a goal and Sharon Williams were Kaniva’s best.

In a free flowing game Warracknabeal women just held out Dimboola 2 – 1 in the other women’s match. Best were Alana Argent and Julie Langman for Warracknabeal, and Michelle Searle and Naomi Kuhnell for Dimboola.

In the men, the Hoops and Dimboola had the same score line as their women counterparts, a 2 – 1 win to the Hoops, in a very open and even game. In the first half Dimboola employed a strategy of short passes, while the Hoops long direct game provided many scoring chances, but at half time it was still nil all. The Hoops renown for strong second halves didn’t disappoint with goals to Simon Bardell and Corey Sutton in the first 15 minutes of the half. Dimboola replied late in the half through a great carry down the length of the field effort by Tim Jorgensen. He crossed the ball to Jarryd Tischler who scored a great goal. Nathan Kent and Stephen Laverty were best for the Hoops while Tim Jorgenson and David Johincke were Dimboola’s best.

Yanac Tigers defeated Kaniva 3 – 0 in the other men’s match. A lot of midfield play with the Tigers experience allowing them to make the most of their opportunities. Adam Clohesy scored the only goal of the half following a scrimmage in the D. Kaniva were unlucky not to capitalise on some good play in their attacking half. Despite fantastic play by Kaniva in the second half it was Yanac who made the most of their opportunities. Luke Reichenbach and Mick Dart were best for Yanac, and Alan King and Reilly Sanders were Kaniva’s best.

Round 11 Review

Drawn games and close contests in tough conditions at Dimboola on the weekend made for some interesting play in the Wimmera Hockey Assciation matches.
Top junior sides Kangaroos and Leopards played a brilliant and exciting match, with Dimboola enjoying a home crowd advantage. Dimboola came out firing and within the early part of the game expert forward player James Klinge scored twice. This forced the Leopards on the back foot, a position that they have not been used to this season. Needless to say, they stepped up the pace and managed not just one, or two, but three reply goals through Alex Pipkorn, Tom Cook and Oscar Stephan to lead the match 3-2 at half time. The second half was fiercely fought out and it was up to James Klinge to score brilliantly again to draw the match, a fitting end to a close rivalry for these teams, which looks set to continue into the finals.
Nhill Bandits and Horsham Bombers also played a tight encounter and it was captains leading the way, with goals to Jarryd Bendall and Josh Sykes-Atkins. Jordyn Pizzoni and Monique Schwedes were solid in the Bombers half back line whilst newcomer Kimberly Trounce showed her stuff in the forward line. Jack Janetzki and Lauren Bendall played brilliantly for the Bandits. This was a confidence boosting draw for the Bombers, who are still fighting for their first win this year.
The women’s competition just gets tighter as the year progresses, with two drawn games at the weekend. The Kaniva women attacked early in their game against Yanac, but it was Yanac who scored first after 10 minutes. Kaniva, however, didn’t give up and a great combination between Nyree Hutchins and Nicol Wilson resulted in a goal in the dying minutes before half time. Yanac had many opportunities in the second half, but couldn’t convert. Kaniva’s Claire McDonald and Chelsea Dahlenburg combined well in Kaniva’s attack. Yanac’s Sheree May and Kaniva’s Hannah Bedford were a constant annoyance to their opposing sides in half back. Junior Jess Wheaton was impressive and will make a skilled future player for Yanac. The game was drawn one all at the final whistle and both these teams now need to fine tune their skills to ensure a place in the finals.
Nhill Thunderbirds and Highlanders also competed in an extremely close encounter. The Highlanders displayed some great teamwork early, passing the ball well and talking, which resulted in many pushes toward goal. Thunderbirds also had some chances, but Highlanders defence through Lorna Schilling and Shannon Jakobi was far too strong. The second half was more even, with Thunderbirds players Ebony Stephan and Pam Cramer shooting the ball toward their end repeatedly, but to no avail. Highlanders had chances through many short corners, but even the accuracy of attackers Ellie Morrow and Kate Ferrier was unable to penetrate a determined Birdies defence, led by goalie Debbie Barber.
The men’s competition was a little less tight with the Horsham Hurricanes winning a comfortable 4-1 match against Kaniva. The Hurricanes’ goals were evenly spread, with Luke Dunn and Paul Mackereth scoring two apiece, whilst Captain Stuart Hoffman played a best-on-ground performance. Kaniva’s goal came off a penalty shot, which was converted by capable shooter Reily Sanders. Christian Stimpson and goalie Brett Jewell were the best for Kaniva, saving many of the Hurricanes advances toward goal.
Warracknabeal Hoops also defeated Dimboola 4-1. Alex Bardell scored twice, with Shane Langman and Ethan Schilling the other scorers. Jarryd Tischler scored for Dimboola and Tim Jorgensen and Craig Searle were stand outs in the back line.

Round 10 Rewiew

The much anticipated clash of the undefeated Leopards and Kangaroos did not disappoint. Both teams have dominated opponents this year and look set to meet each other in the grand final.

From the start it was hard and very fast hockey with the Leopards scoring the first goal and going into the break with the advantage. Again early in the second half it was the Leopards firing on all cylinders, and with a 4 – 1 lead late into the game looked like they were going to crush the Kangaroos as they had done to all other comers to date. Oscar Stephen had three goals while Sarah Wallis scored the other. Tom Cook, Adrian Creek, and Natalie Jones were also great for the Leopards, and Chris Jones again excellent as goalie.

Then with 15 minutes remaining the Kangaroos fought back with 2 goals to James Klinge, but it was too late and the Leopards held on to just win 4- 3. Nathan Jorgensen, Ben Gebert, and Elizabeth Klinge played well for the Kangaroos, and Clay Nuske scored their other goal. It was a highly skilled match and maybe some home ground advantage helped the Leopards over the line. We look forward to their next clash.

In the women, Warracknabeal and Horsham had a very close match, with Warracknabeal making the most of their opportunities to win 2 – 0, and consolidate their position in the four. Best for Warracknabeal were Julie Langman and Lauren Dart. Ellie Morrow and Robyn Creek played well for the Highlanders.

The Nhill Thunderbirds struck back from their shock defeat last week, scoring two early goals, and having most of the play in the first half against Kaniva. The second half, however, was a different story with Donna Meyer and Hannah Meyer scoring a goal a piece to draw the match 2 – 2. Best for the Thunderbirds were Laura Wallis and Helen Cannell. Hannah Bedford and Donna Meyer were best for Kaniva.

Yanac defeated Dimboola women 1 – 0 in a battle of the defences. In a match with very few scoring shots, Erin Blackwood snuck a goal in after a scramble on the goal line. Sharee May and Sarah Coughlin played well for Yanac, and Michelle Searle and Jess Ross were Dimboola’s best.

Round 10 Preview

The most anticipated game of the season so far will take place between junior teams Dimboola Kangaroos and Nhill Leopards, who are both undefeated this year. These teams both seem unstoppable and the match on the weekend could be a taste of what to expect in the grand final. Kangaroos have many fierce attackers such as Nathan Jorgensen and James and Elizabeth Klinge and with such a diverse range of talent shooting at goal the Leopards defenders will find it difficult. The Leopards, however, have key attackers such as Tom Cook, Adrian Creek and Oscar Stephan. They also boast Natalie Jones, who is constantly improving and will be on fire after scoring 3 goals last week. With so much talent in both sides, it will be a matter of the best teamwork as to which team prevails.
In the men’s competition, the rivalry between Horsham Hurricanes and Warracknabeal Hoops will be set to continue in Warracknabeal on Saturday. Hurricanes will come off a disappointing win to top side Tigers last week and will be looking for some more points as the finals near. The Hoffman brothers, Stuart and Jordan, will be key attackers for the Hurricanes, along with young gun Lachlan Zordan. However, Hoops are a win ahead of Hurricanes this year and with experienced players such as Paul Slater and Shane Langman, they will be a hard side to beat.
In a game sure to be interesting, Kaniva once again takes on the Nhill Thunderbirds. Nhill started the year strong, winning the first four matches, but it took the young Kaniva side to stop their winning run. Nhill will be determined to win this week, to show that they are still a serious team, after a humiliating 5-0 loss to Warracknabeal last week. Kaniva is also a team that started the year well, but seem to have faded as the year has progressed. Thunderbirds have skilled attackers Grace McLeod and Bridie Kennedy; however Kaniva also has capable attackers in Rachel Clark and Sharon Williams. This game will be a chance for both teams to show that they are real threats in this competition and the final result is sure to be tight.
In another junior match, lower ladder placed teams Warriors and Kookaburras will play a close match. These teams have won the same amount of games this year and will be hoping to advance their position. Warriors have players such as Erin Blackwood and Jess Wheaton in defence that will make it hard for Kookaburras attack, including Cara Elsom and Bethany Terry. The teams will both be eager for an encouraging win this week, with neither team realistically looking to the finals this year.
In other matches, Yanac and Dimboola women face each other, Bandits at home will be looking for an easy win over Bombers, Highlanders will have a hard task to beat the improving Warracknabeal women’s side and Yanac Tigers should overcome the Dimboola men’s team.

Round 9 Review

Wimmera Hockey Association matches were played in Kaniva and Horsham on the weekend.
The women’s competition this year is very even, with some upset wins on the weekend. Yanac was able to get over the Horsham Highlanders at home. The first half was evenly played, but Yanac broke away in the second half after Horsham’s Robyn Creek went off injured. Yanac’s captain Sarah Coughlan was best afield, creating lots of chances for scorers Sheree May and Naomi Brick. Anne Blackwood was solid in defence for Yanac. Kate Ferrier and Carmel McFarlane were the best for the Highlanders, who will be disappointed after this loss. Yanac are showing themselves to be a team to beat in the competition this year.
Dimboola women and Kaniva women played a very even contest at Kaniva. Dimboola’s Michelle Searle played a great defensive game, keeping Kaniva’s score to only one in the first half, despite them having most of the attack. Dimboola forwards Elizabeth Klinge and Jess Ross, however, made no mistake, converting one each for the half. Kaniva came out fired up in the second half and put one on the board early, through Rachel Clark. Dimboola had many more chances to score late in the half, but some good defending by Kaniva’s Hannah Bedford, Donna Meyer and goalie Krystal Smith made sure that nothing got through. The game was drawn at the final siren, a fitting end to a spectacular match.
In the men’s competition, top side Tigers were too good for the Horsham Hurricanes. Simon Farmers created lots of opportunities and the Tigers scored through Mick Dart and Jamie Harding. For the Hurricanes, goalie Steve Gross stood out, stopping many shots at goal, whilst at the other end Luke Dunn and Jarred Knoop were dangerous in the circle. The Tigers seem to be unstoppable this season and are best bets for premiers if they can keep up their form.
The junior competition saw a close tussle between bottom sides Warriors and Bombers, with Warriors prevailing for their first win of the season. Marney Croot played an outstanding game for the Warriors, setting up many shots and eventually scoring herself, to give her team the win. Alex Wheaton was also important for the Warriors. Back line player Patrick Bush was solid in defence for the Bombers, whilst half back Monique Schwedes pushed the ball forward in a desperate attempt to allow her team to score. The Yanac players will all be ecstatic to finally have their first win this season.
Nhill Bandits won an important game against Warracknabeal Revengers. The game was played at a fast and furious pace, with both teams having great teamwork. Captain Jarryd Bendall and sister Lauren were the scorers for the Bandits, showing very good skills. Ethan Schilling and Tom Hewitt were the best in the forward line for the Revengers, creating lots of chances, just unable to convert. In the end it was the Bandits who made the most of their chances to come out 2-0 winners.

Round 8 Review

Warriors continued to show improvement. In a good even game against the Bandits, the Warriors took control early and shot 2 good goals. Bandits fought back late in the half scoring a goal and were unlucky not to get another. The Bandits dominated the second half scoring two magnificent goals early and were able to hold on. The Warriors had plenty of chances that were kept out as a result of strong Bandit defence. Bandits won 3-2.

Raiders dominated in the 1st half in the clash with the Black Hawks, scoring 2 goals. The Black Hawks had trouble getting the ball into their half. The Raiders passed the ball well. In the second half the Black Hawks had a new lease of life getting the ball into attack more often and improved teamwork. However, it was the Raiders who scored again. It was only the great work by Black Hawks goalie Quentin Barrett who stopped the Raiders scoring more. Raiders won 3-0.

The Kangaroos were too strong right across the field. The Kookaburras trying hard in defence but couldn't match the strength and skill of the Kangaroos. Half time score was 7-0 to Kangas. In the second half the Kookaburras shoed more fight keeping the Kangaroos scoreless for 15 minutes. The Kangaroos strength though overcame them and in the end it was Kangaroos 10 to Kookaburras 0. Nathan Jorgensen continued his impressive goal scoring with 2.

In the other game the Revengers defeated an improving Bombers 3-0

Round 7 Review

Horsham was the place to be last Saturday, when the Wimmera Hockey Association’s matches converged on the racecourse for an exciting action packed day. It was close matches on the menu as spectators were treated to some very exciting and skilful play.
The women’s competition saw the Nhill Thunderbirds and Dimboola fight out it out to the end. Nhill started well in the first half but were unable to convert, despite a close shot just skimming the back line. In the second half, Dimboola attacked really well and had many close shots through inners Jess Ross and Naomi Kuhnell. However, the Nhill defence of Alannah Creek and Pam Cramer were solid and Dimboola were unable to penetrate. The game ended in a fitting nil-all draw, showing that the women’s competition is really wide open this year and no teams are safe for the finals yet.
The Warracknabeal Hoops won an important match to overcome the previously undefeated Yanac Tigers side in the men’s competition. Yanac missed shots early but the Warracknabeal defence, through Steven Laverty, held strong and they were rewarded with a goal before half time. The game was even in the second half, with forwards Paul Slater and Shane Langman attacking well for Warracknabeal and Luke Reichenbach and Josh Cramer scoring for the Tigers.
In the junior competition, young side Yanac Warriors put on a great performance to draw with Warracknabeal Revengers. Yanac have not won a game yet, but were firing on Saturday. Erin Blackwood and Jess Wheaton were standout defenders for the Warriors, whilst on the other side, Nakita Langman and Edward Aitken stood strong for Warracknabeal. Alex Wheaton set up many shots for the Warriors and Ethan Schilling attacked well for the Revengers. Warracknabeal will be disappointed not to beat the Warriors and will now have to start improving for any hope of making the finals.
Top side and undefeated Leopards were challenged by Kaniva Raiders in the junior competition, with Kaniva showing that they are a real finals chance this year. After a slow start to the game, Nhill’s half back line started to fire through Tom Cook. Oscar Stephan scored two quick opportunistic goals to put Nhill on the front foot. Strong work by Kaniva’s half backs Claire McDonald and Liam Wallis kept the scoring to a minimum. Kaniva came out firing in the second half to upset the flow of Nhill’s game. Kendall Meyer scored a well hit goal, but at the end of the game, Leopards had once again prevailed, to keep their winning streak going.
In a best on ground performance, Kayjay Florinell scored twice in the Kookaburras 4-2 defeat of Horsham’s Black Hawks. Black Hawks defenders Sean Creek and Elly O’Connor were solid in defence and Andrew Valentine and youngster Claire Barnett were the scorers for the Black Hawks. Cara Elsom and Bethaney Terry were key defenders for the Kookaburras.
In an upset, Horsham Highlanders scored only their second win for the season, over the talented Kaniva women’s side. Ellie Morrow was the sole scorer for the Highlanders and teammate Kate Ferrier put on a best on ground performance. Nicol Wilson was the best for Kaniva, whilst junior Roey Sanders played a mature game. Kaniva will be disappointed not to win this game and will be looking to regroup after two losses in a row.
Other matches saw the Horsham Hurricanes defeat the Kaniva men 2-0, Yanac women just prevail over Warracknabeal and the Kangaroos trounce the Bombers 8-0.

Round 6 Review

Wimmera hockey games moved east this week to Horsham and Dimboola following welcome recent rains. Even games were the theme of the week as the season gets into full swing and top four positions are at stake.

At Dimboola on a very fast low cut surface, Dimboola Men showed much improvement in a narrow defeat 4 – 3 against Warracknabeal in the game of the day. The first half was very even, but it was Josh Halsall on the end of a good pass giving Dimboola a one nil lead into the break. It seems to be the case each week, Warracknabeal’s direct style allows them to dominate the second half as opposition teams tire. The Hoops hit three quick goals to put themselves in a very strong position. However this time Dimboola struck back with Shane Schwarz hitting two goals to even things up. In the tense final few minutes the Hoops won a short corner and skilfully converted. Shane Langman and Craig Searle were standouts for their respective defences. In the other game Yanac Tigers were once again too strong for an improving Kaniva winning 2 – 0.

Nhill Bandits and Dimboola Kangaroos played a top game. The Bandits were first to with a goal in the opening minutes to Duncan Koop. But the Kangaroos fought back into the game and began to dominate with goals to Kelly Smithyman and Nathan Jorgensen. The second half again saw the Kangaroos have most of the possession and a goal by Brydon Tischler put the result beyond doubt giving the Kangaroos a 3 – 1 victory.

At Horsham and in a battle of the Horsham junior teams Blackhawks defeated the Bombers 1 – 0. Both defences were strong with Monique Schwedes and Josh Sykes-Atkins forming a brick wall in defence for the Bombers, while Sean Creek and Allie Salter held things together at the other end for the Blackhawks. A highlight of the game was some good play by up and coming players such as Will Lehmann and Rupert Lang for the Blackhawks, and Blakes Sykes and Jack Vauge for the Bombers. Tristan Barret was the hero scoring the only goal.

In another high standard junior match the Raiders defeated the Revengers in a battle for the coveted fourth position on the ladder. The Revengers got off to a flying start with a top goal to Rebecca McPherson. Raiders defended well with Roey Sanders and Tim Eastwood the standouts. Revengers piled on the pressure early in the second half through Ethan Schilling, Nakita Langman, and Eddie Aitken. But it was the Raiders who dug deepest scoring two second half goals to take the game 2 – 1.

The ladder leaders Leopards beat the Kookaburras 14 – 0 in the other junior game.

In an upset Dimboola Women pulled themselves off the bottom of the ladder with a 3 – 0 win over Warracknabeal. An even first half saw all the field being used. Dimboola had many chances but were stopped by Warracknabeal’s strong defence led by Jenny Ford. Trailing one nil into the second half Dimboola, in particular Marly Sallman came out firing scoring three goals. Sue Puls got one back but it was not enough and Dimboola was victorious. Jess Ross and Jennifer Klinge were best for Dimboola.
Yanac Women surprised with a 3 – 0 win over second place win over Kaniva. Naomi Brick scored twice in the first half. What a difference a week makes as Kaniva beat top of the ladder Thunderbirds. The women’s competition is unfolding as the most even of the three competitions. In the other match the Thunderbirds got over the Highlanders 2 – 0.

Round 6 Preview

This weekend’s Wimmera Hockey Association matches will be split between Dimboola and Horsham.
Starting the day at a very early 9.30am in Dimboola are the Bandits and Kangaroos. These teams have showed their talent so far this year and the match will be highly skilled and competitive. Kangaroos have a number of key forward players who will be dangerous if given opportunity. Nathan Jorgensen and Elizabeth Klinge are two of the players that will be ready to add to their totals this year The Bandits, however, have displayed lots of great teamwork and this could make it hard for the Kangaroos.
Another interesting junior match will be between Raiders and Revengers. Raiders thrashed the Kookaburras last week but will have to be careful they don’t get ahead of themselves, as the Revengers are a much tougher team. Revengers had the bye last week, so, in theory, should be rested and ready to play. Raiders Kendall Meyer is the Raiders key forward and if he attacks, will be very dangerous for the Revengers. Revengers, however, have a few key players such as Rebecca McPherson, Mark Molony and Tom Hewitt that Raiders will need to watch. This should be a close game, as both teams are fairly evenly placed this season.
The two Horsham junior teams will take on each other in a highly prized match. The Bombers are traditionally the better of the Horsham teams, but this year has not managed a win, compared to the Black Hawks. Bombers have experienced players such as Josh Sykes Atkins, Jordyn Pizzoni and Monique Schwedes, who will be very valuable. However, the Black Hawks have a great team spirit, and whilst being overall younger, have key players such as Andrew Valentine, Allie Salter and Sean Creek. The Black Hawks have most of their team carrying over from last year, whilst the Bombers have experienced many changes. The Black Hawks have a real chance of taking the game to the Bombers this time and the final score will be very close.
In the women’s competition, wildcards Kaniva will take on Yanac, after a convincing win last week. Kaniva has a really competitive team this year, with players such as Mary Kedwell and Nicol Wilson creating lots of opportunities for their team. Yanac, however, have players including Sheree May and Sarah Coughlan who will be just as competitive. Although Kaniva seem to be a real threat to everyone this year, Yanac have lots of team spirit and could come out with a win.
In the men’s competition, top side Tigers take on Kaniva, who have only managed one win this year. Kaniva have a young talented side, including players Clint Beattie and Ben Schwedes, but may struggle against the more experienced Tigers, who boast players such as Luke Reichenbach and Kim Croot. Tigers seem to be unstoppable this year, not losing a game yet. This is the first time the teams have met this year and it may be a surprise win for Kaniva, who don’t seem to have played to their full potential yet. In the other men’s game, the young Dimboola side take on Warrack Hoops.

Round 5 Review

Wimmera Hockey Association matches were played at Nhill on the weekend, in some tough wet weather.
The women’s competition saw the Horsham Highlanders and Warracknabeal compete in a very even game. Warracknabeal caught the Highlanders by surprise in the opening minutes through Karin Triffitt, who got a crucial goal. The rest of the game was played out very evenly and despite the best efforts of the Highlanders Kate Ferrier and Ellie Morrow, they were unable to score. Warracknabeal also had some solid attack in Alana Argent and Jenny Ford and the game ended 1-0 for Warrack.
In an upset win, Kaniva managed to get over the unbeaten Thunderbirds 3-0. Kaniva came out firing, Nicol Wilson converting a strong hit at goal after some good passing downfield. The Nhill defence played very well, led by goalie Rosa Goode and defenders Jeanette McLeod and Pam Cramer. In the second half, Kaniva were once again in attack, with Mary Kedwell dominating through excellent stick work, control and passing. Kaniva were able to get 2 more, including a beautiful reverse stick deflection from Rachel Clarke. Nhill had some strong attacks through Katrina Wallis and Laura Wallis and were unfortunate not to convert.
In the junior competition, the Black Hawks took on the Bandits. Bandits were far more experienced as a team and were able to score 3 times within the first half, despite a determined Black Hawks defence coming from goalie Eric Hayden. The Black Hawks managed to get a score on the board before half time thanks to a great solo run from Andrew Valentine. In the second half, Bandits used their good teamwork through half backs Jarryd Bendall and Ben Smith to get another 3 goals but the Black Hawks stayed determined until the finish. In the end it was a comfortable win for the Bandits.
Dimboola Kangaroos had a convincing win over Yanac Warriors in another of the junior matches. It was a fast game with Dimboola having most of the play. Nathan Jorgensen was top scorer for the Kangaroos with 3, but captain Elizabeth Klinge was also on fire, scoring 2. The Warriors put up a great fight, however, and scored 2 of their own through Sam Bone and Anna Reichenbach. In the end the Kangaroos scored a convincing win over the determined Warriors.
The men’s competition saw the Warracknabeal Hoops dominate over an undermanned Hurricanes team, to prevail 6-3. Nhill Tigers continued their winning run to overcome Dimboola 5-2. The other women’s match between Yanac and Dimboola was won by Yanac 2-0. The other junior games saw Raiders trounce the Kookaburras, 11-1 and Leopards score 5 to beat Bombers, who were unable to score.

Round 4 Review

It was the women’s hockey games that held the most interest in round 4 of Wimmera hockey in Yanac on Saturday.

The top of the ladder clash between the Thunderbirds and Warracknabeal Women saw an excellent 2 nil victory to Nhill. Ebony Stephens and Pam Cramer ably led the Nhill team. Julie Langman and Cathy Noone fought bravely in defence for Warracknabeal.

The Highlanders recorded their first win of the year against the more favoured Yanac Women. A tight first half had both teams driving forward, with Launa Schilling controlling things in defence and Kate Ferrier also impressive for the Highlanders. Within 30 seconds of the half time break Denise Vallance scored for the Highlanders. This was followed by many Highlander attacks on goal in the early part of the second half but with Anne Blackwood Yanac’s standing strong in defence, Horsham could not break through. Yanac managed a couple of good goal opportunities late but were not able to convert.

Kaniva Women managed to get past Dimboola in the other women’s match. Both teams dominated at different stages throughout the match, and it was two goals within 5 minutes by Chelsea Sanders that gave Kaniva a winning lead. Dimboola continued to have their chances. Lisa Robson and Jess Ross playing well, and managed to convert through Michelle Searle but could not bridge the gap.

In the juniors the Leopards and Bandits played a fantastic match. Fast end to end hockey saw a great late goal to youngster Jayden Newcombe break the deadlock. Leopards best included Adrian Creek, and Tom Cook, while the Jarryd and Lauren Bendall starred for the Bandits.

The Horsham Black Hawks had a big win over the Warriors. Andrew Valentine was the goal scorer and best for the Black s were Sean Creek, Ally Slater and Elly O’Connor. While Alex Wheaton, Erin Blackwood and Marny Croot all played well for the Warriors.

Kaniva Men got up in the dying seconds of their match against Dimboola to record their first victory in the competition. Well done Kaniva.

Round 4 Preview

Round 4 of the Wimmera Hockey Association will take place on Saturday at Yanac.
The day starts with a showdown between the two Nhill junior teams, Leopards and Bandits. Both teams are doing really well this year and are near the top of the ladder. The Leopards have a broad range of goal scorers such as Adrian Creek, who has scored every game so far, and with Captain Tom Cook playing well, the Leopards look to really put on a show. However, the Bandits also have many potential goal scorers such as Tim Braendler, and providing they can hold off the Leopard’s attack, will be in with a very good chance. This game will be high in the minds of all the players, as they know every one of their opposition and a lot of reputation is at stake.
In other junior games, younger sides Yanac Warriors and Horsham Black Hawks will face each other. The Black Hawks have had a week off and will be hoping for a new revival and perhaps some goals this week. Captain Shaun Creek will be urging his players on and key players Allie Salter and Andrew Valentine will be instrumental in their team’s achievements. They will, however, find it hard to get past the Warriors tough defence which includes Jess Wheaton, Erin Blackwood and goalie Ryan Smith, who have only let 4 goals through this season.
The women’s competition sees another rivalry match, in a grand final replay between Nhill Thunderbirds and Warracknabeal. These teams have again showed their dominance in the competition this year and are sitting first and second on the ladder. This will be a high quality game and the Thunderbirds will be looking to make amends for last year’s disappointing grand final defeat. Laura Wallis, Grace McLeod and Holly Kennedy will be looking for quick goals for the Thunderbirds, whilst Alana Argent and Kate Nikkelson will be key players for Warracknabeal. This is an important game for both teams to really get ahead and prove their worth early in the season.
In the men’s competition, the bottom two teams, Kaniva and Dimboola will play with both teams longing for a win. Kaniva have a lot of depth in their team and seem unlucky not to have a win yet. If they can get their team working together they will probably win this game, but as a new side in the competition, it may be a while before they can really match the other more experienced teams. Dimboola, on the other hand, had a pretty bad loss in the first round but came back after the bye to record a competitive game against Horsham with minimum players. If they have a full strength team they will be able to match Kaniva and create a great game.
In the other men’s match, top sides Yanac Tigers and Horsham Hurricanes will play a very evenly contested match. This will be a good test for Horsham because they haven’t yet had the bye, whereas the Tigers are coming off a week’s rest and will be fired up to play. With Kim Croot firing for the Tigers and Paul Mackereth and Luke Dunn in form for the Hurricanes, this looks to be a tightly contested match.
The other matches for Saturday will be between Kaniva and Dimboola women, Yanac Women and Highlanders, Raiders and Bombers, and Revengers and Kookaburras. Kangaroos and Hoops have the bye.

Round 3 Review

Round 3 of the Wimmera Hockey Association saw some twilight matches played in Nhill at the Davis Oval. However, this time it was the junior teams showing their stuff under lights and they didn’t disappoint, showing great skill and teamwork in some close matches.
The first twilight game was played against the Nhill Bandits and Kaniva Raiders. The Bandits came out determined and scored within the first 30 seconds, to stun the Raider’s defence. The Bandits, led by the Bendall family, maintained a strong attack for rest of the game, but Raiders defenders Tim Eastwood and Liam Wallis wouldn’t let anything through. The Bandits tired near the end of the game, giving Raiders some chances, but they were unable to convert.
In the other twilight match, the Nhill Leopards were able to overcome the Yanac Warriors, in a good fast game. Warriors Sam Bone was able to sneak the ball under the goalie’s feet to create a spectacular goal in the first half. However, the Leopard’s coach must have had some words at half time and after the break the Leopards came out firing. A good sneaky goal from Nat Jones started the roll Leopards way, and even with the best efforts of Warrior’s Erin Blackwood, Alex Wheaton and Jess Wheaton, Leopards dominated the rest of the game, winning 3-1.
In the other matches, the Warracknabeal and Kaniva women played a very even game. Kaniva had most of the play at the start of the game through Janie Silinger, but Warracknabeal warmed up after a while, making it an even account for the first half. Both teams had plenty of chances with short corners and shots on goals in the second half. Warracknabeal was strong in attack, with Jenny Gaulke and Alana Argent pushing toward goal. However, Kaniva defenders Kayla Saunderson and Claire Riches were able to hold off all attacks at goal, meaning that the final score was a fitting nil-all draw.
The Horsham Highlanders took on Dimboola women, with both teams eager to get a win on the board. It was an evenly played game, with Dimboola having many runs at goal through Michelle Searle and Jess Ross, but Highlanders attackers, led by Ellie Morrow, made the most of their opportunities in the goal. With only a few minutes remaining, the game was drawn at 2-2, then an amazing off the stick goal from Adina King gave Dimboola the win they had been waiting for and left Highlanders pondering another disappointing loss.
The Horsham Hurricanes showed once again that they are a force to be reckoned with this season, overcoming Dimboola. Two goals to both Luke Dunn and Paul Mackereth sealed the Hurricane’s win, with Shane Schwartz standing out for Dimboola, scoring their only two goals in a best on ground performance.
In the other games, Nhill Thunderbirds overcame the Yanac women, Bombers and Kookaburras drew, Warracknabeal Hoops just got over Kaniva men and the Kangaroos were far too good for a young Revengers side.

Round 3 Preview

Saturday sees all matches moved to Davis Oval in Nhill. The highlight being two top class junior matches scheduled to be played under lights. The Bandits take on the Raiders and the Warriors play the Leopards.

The Bandits – Raiders match is too close to call as both teams take good form into the match. The Bandits will be ably led by Jarryd Bendall with a strong supporting cast including Jack Jenetski, Lauren Bendall, Ben Smith, and Morgan Heenan. The Raiders have Kendal Meyer in attack and he will provide plenty of threat, while Tim Eastwood and Liam Wallis up back should make it difficult for the Bandits forwards.

In the second night match the undefeated Nhill Leopards take on the Warriors in what will be a very skilful match. The Leopards deserve to be favourites with a host attacking options, Brady Newcombe, Adrian Creek, Tom Cook, and Natalie Jones. Plus with Chris Jones in goal the team looks well balanced. Warriors Erin Blackwood, Sam Bone, Alex Wheaton and Mary Croot will need to be at their best for the Warriors to have a chance.

In earlier junior matches the Bombers should get by the Kookaburras. But expect the Kangaroos – Revengers match to be closer than recent results suggest. Even though the Kangaroos are the standout team at the moment, the Revengers have plenty of ability and if they can find a way to score they just may push the Kangaroos.

Round 2 Review

The game of choice in Yanac is Hockey. With no football team and strong community support, Yanac puts three quality hockey teams on the field each week. Two of their teams – Tigers and Warriors – were involved in grand final replays, the score lines being remarkably similar.

The replay of the men’s grand final saw the Warracknabeal Hoops lose a heartbreaking match against the Tigers. The first half saw good fast hockey with the ball moving end to end. Yanac Tigers attacking through their wings while the Hoops employed a more direct style. The Tigers went into the break with a deserved 1 nil lead. In the second half the Hoops came to life with Cameon Bardell the main threat in attack. High class goals from Bardell and Marcus Keam and a scrambled goal put the Hoops up 3-2 with minutes remaining in the match. With the Hoops dominating play and the Tigers uncharacteristically subdued, it looked like the game was over. This all changed with a powerful back stick goal by Kim Croot from the edge of the D that ignited the Tigers, this was quickly followed by another, and all of a sudden the game was over with the Tigers again winning 4 – 3.

Horsham Hurricanes fought hard with ten men to hold off a spirited Kaniva. Kaniva were impressive in their first game and will only improve as the year goes on. Paul Mackereth and Steve Gross was best for the Hurricanes, and Christian Stimson and Damien McKewan were in Kaniva’s best

With welcome rain falling the junior grand final replay began in scrappy fashion. But players soon adjusted and Kendal Meyer of the Kaniva Raiders scored his first through a short corner. Then just before half time a deflection off Yanac Warrior Marny Croot’s stick drew the scores level. But Kendall Meyer scored again for the Raiders in the second half to give them win. Liam Wallis and Tim Eastwood were strong in defence all day for Kaniva. While for the Warriors best included Erin Blackwood, Alex Weaton, and Anna Riechenbach.

In other junior matches, the Kangaroos and Bandits were impressive with strong wins in heavy conditions. Kangaroo Nathan Jorgensen already has eight goals from only two matches. In finer conditions the Leopards and the Revengers played a compelling match. The Revengers controlled the game for the most part. But it was the Leopards Goalie Chris Jones who held firm plus fine goals from Adrian Creek and Brady Newcombe that proved the difference, Leopards winning 3-0. Tom Hewitt and Ethen Schilling were best for the Revengers.

A strong second half in slow conditions and the Warracknabeal women defeated Yanac 2-1. Best for Warracknabeal was Kate Nicholson with 2 goals, while Sarah Coughlan and Joanne Wheaton were Yanac’s best. Nhill Thunderbirds scored 2 early goals against a determined Dimboola defence. Despite having more of the play in the second half, conditions did not allow Dimboola back into the match. Best for Nhill was Pam Cramer, while Michelle Searle played well for Dimboola. With the rain teaming down Kaniva and Horsham Highlanders battled hard. The conditions not allowing for free flowing hockey. Kaniva prevailed with a single goal to Nicol Wilson. Defenders Donna Meyer and Claire Riches best for Kaniva, while Ginny Forrest and Launa Schilling were in Horsham’s best.

Round 2 Preview

The second week of the 2007 Wimmera Hockey Association’s games will be played in Yanac.
It will be the first time anyone gets a look at the new Kaniva men’s team, who had a bye last week after joining the Association at the start of the year. They will take on the Horsham Hurricanes, who have just come off a hard fought draw with Warracknabeal last week and will be looking forward to getting a win on the board this week.
In a grand final rematch, the Warracknabeal Hoops will take on the Yanac Tigers. Warracknabeal will be looking to once again assert their dominance after narrowly losing the grand final last year. This promises to be a very hard hitting match, as both teams want to get psychologically on top at the beginning of the season.
The Dimboola Kookaburras will also have their first game tomorrow after also having a bye last week. They are taking on the up and coming Nhill Bandits, who had a narrow loss last week and will be looking to improve their performance this week.
The top two junior teams from last year, Raiders and Warriors face each other in a rematch of last year’s grand final, in a game that looks to be fought out until the end. However, both teams have lost some crucial players. Raiders have lost captain Riley Sanders, but still have promising young players such as Claire McDonald and Tim Eastwood. The Raiders have also come off a surprising 8-1 loss to Dimboola last week. The Warriors have lost players Anne Blackwood and Matthew Kube to the senior competition, but managed a draw last week, showing that their team still has the depth to succeed this season.
The Kaniva women will take on the Horsham Highlanders with both teams having one loss already and looking to get a better start in the competition. The Kaniva team has lots of young talent, with some players coming from the juniors to fill the ranks. This will be a close game – both teams played last year’s grand finalists last week and lost 2-0. The Highlanders will come out fighting with experienced players Launa Schilling and Robyn Creek urging their team forward. The Kaniva team, however, looks very fit and will be hard to beat.
Last year’s premiers Warracknabeal will take on Yanac in a women’s competition match that will be very close. Yanac has come off a convincing win from last week and will be hoping to improve their tally. Warracknabeal has some reliable players in Suzanne Puls and Kate Nicholson, but Yanac has lots young players with the Blackwood sisters and captain Sarah Coughlan strong in defence. Yanac also has a lot of goal scorers who will be looking for the quick goal, unlike Warrack’s hard hitting goal style.

Season 2007 gets underway

Round 1 Wimmera Hockey Association - Nhill

Hundreds of junior and senior hockey players, support staff, and spectators will hit the school grounds of Nhill tomorrow launching the 2007 Wimmera district hockey season. With the drought affecting so many sports grounds throughout the region we are lucky to have the option of playing many of the games on grounds irrigated with bore water in Nhill, Kaniva, and Yanac. The extra travelling will be a significant issue for the Warracknabeal and Horsham teams.

In the juniors, last years rising stars the Nhill Leopards take on the Horsham Black Hawks. Prior to this last year’s premier’s the Kaniva Raiders meet the Kangaroos in what will be another good match. Two of last year’s highfliers the Warriors and the Bombers play each other, both have lost key players to senior ranks. In the other game the Revengers and Bandits will fight for first points. The Kookaburras have the bye.

Anticipation of the new Kaniva men’s team has been somewhat offset by the disappointment of losing the Nhill men. Kaniva was set to play Nhill in the first round, but will now have the bye. We will have to wait until next week to get a look at Kaniva. Dimboola men, with the association’s leading men’s player Tim Jorgenson, have the chance to start the year on a good note. A strong performance against the reining men’s premiers Yanac Tigers will certainly do that. Yanac’s has two new players in forward Matt Kube from the Warriors and Jamie Harding across from Nhill Leopards. Warracknabeal Hoops and Horsham Hurricanes are set to continue their rivalry in what should be an exciting match. The Hoops got past the Hurricanes in last year’s preliminary final and will be keen to maintain their edge. The Hurricanes welcome Tim Nooteboom and Ash Clark up from juniors.

Kaniva women will want to atone for last year’s finals disappointments. Losing on penalty flicks after extra time is not the way a team wants to lose finals, but it was good to watch. The game against last year’s runners up, Nhill Thunderbirds, promises to be a beauty. Reining women’s premiers Warracknabeal begin their quest for yet another premiership with a game against the Horsham Highlanders. Warracknabeal are likely to be the benchmark again, while the Highlanders have a host of new faces: Kate Rhook, Kate Ferrier, and Ellie Morrow, plus several juniors, and much to prove. Yanac women meet Dimboola in what should be a closely fought match. Yanac welcome defender Anne Blackwood up from the Warriors.
