Round 6 Review

Juniors

As expected, the Yanac Warriors won against the Horsham Bombers. The Bombers were able to hold the Warriors down to a score of 8 goals; last time these two teams played the Warriors scored 15 goals. The Warriors dominated the whole game with great team play around the field, and even their younger players got in on the goal scoring. The Bombers players did really well to keep the score down to 4 goals in each half, as their back line would have been quite worn out.

The Dimboola Kangaroos had an off day against the Kaniva Raiders, who ran away with the game and scored 9 unanswered goals. The game started out with less skillful bashing of the ball from one end to the other, but as the game progressed both teams started using some more skillful passing play. In the second half Kaniva converted their goal scoring opportunities to add 6 more goals to their tally. Kangaroo's defense had a tough day, but kept on trying to repel the Raiders attacks, which allowed the Raiders to keep Kangaroos scoreless.

The Nhill Leopards went down to the Dimboola Kookaburras in a close match. Leopards did manage to score some goals of their own, but the forwards for the Kookaburras got the job done. Goals and votes for the Kookaburras went to Jayrell Guzarem (3 votes, 1 goal), Ashlee Crowhurst (2 votes), Jamie Guerin (1 vote, 2 goals) and Louis Haines (1 goal). For the Leopards goalie Alex Welsh (3 votes), Molly Webb (2 votes) and Taylor Dent (1 vote, 2 goals) earned the umpires votes.

Women

The Dimboola Women came out hard against the Horsham Highlanders, and by half time were 3 goals ahead. The second half saw the Highlanders resist Dimboola's attacking forwards ferociously, but couldn't manage to score any goals of their own. The final score was Dimboola 4, Highlanders 0. Votes and goals for Dimboola went to Meaghan Pohlner (3 votes), Elizabeth Klinge (2 votes), Kristin Klinge (1 vote, 1 goal), Judith Albrecht (1 goal), Michelle Searle (1 goal) and Zoe Harberger (1 goal). Best on ground for Highlanders were Ellie Morrow (3 votes), Elly O'Conner (2 votes) with Robyn Creek and Launa Schilling (1 vote each).

The Yanac Women put on a terrific performance to beat the Nhill Thunderbirds. In the first half Yanac put in a goal early, but Nhill fought back hard with several goal scoring opportunities but failed to make the most of them. The second half saw Yanac come out strong scoring a second goal through Erin Blackwood. Nhill pushed through the rest of the half but couldn't convert until after the final whistle from a penalty corner. In hockey a penalty corner is played out even if the time has run out.

The Warracknabeal Women came out on top against the Kaniva Women. The first half saw Kaniva's back line working hard against the constant attacks from Warracknabeal. Warracknabeal managed to score 3 goals, while keeping Kaniva scoreless. In the second half Kaniva scored one goal through Lisa Stimson, but Warracknabeal added 4 more goals to their total. Votes and goals for Warracknabeal were Alana Argent (3 votes, 3 goals), Linley Arnold-Wardle (2 votes, 1 goal), Jess Furrey (1 vote) and Jenny Gaulky (3 goals).

Men

The Horsham Hurricanes home ground advantage didn't come into play against the Dimboola Men. Dimboola had scored 2 goals by half time by making the most of their frequent attacks. Hurricanes had a few attacking runs, but no scores were made as a result. In the second half the Hurricanes and Dimboola attacked more frequently without any scoring from both teams. The end result was Dimboola 2, Hurricanes 0. Goals and votes for Dimboola went to Ryan Booth (3 votes), Carl Nuske (2 votes), James Klinge (1 vote), Nathan Jorgensen and Sam Wunderzitz (1 goal each). Best for Horsham were Stuart Hoffman (3 votes), Richard Kemp (2 votes) and Paul Mackereth (1 vote).

The Nhill Rangers almost held on to a draw against the Yanac Tigers in a very good match. Both teams were attacking strongly in the first half, with Yanac earning some penalty corners but not scoring. Yanac would have scored if the Rangers goalie Graeme Jago didn't make a spectacular mid air stick deflection. The second half saw Yanac return to their winning form with some accurate passing and plays, resulting in 2 goals. Rangers got to play out some penalty corners but could not score. Goals and votes for Tigers were Simon Farmers (3 votes), Michael Dart (2 votes), Adam Clohesy and Michael Croot (1 vote each), Kim Croot and Shaun Alexander (1 goal each). Rangers best were Mont Miller (3 votes), Graeme Janetzki (2 votes) and David Reichelt (1 vote).

The final mens game of the day was a nail biter between Warracknabeal Hoops and Kaniva. Warracknabeal had most of the play throughout the game, and scored 2 goals to Kaniva's 1. Kaniva had only a few attacking plays and made the most of them, scoring 2 more goals to take them into the lead halfway through the second half. Warracknabeal held onto the ball for the rest of the game with relentless attacking – but could not increase their score, which showed as the Hoops became quite heated against the other players and umpires. The final score was Kaniva 3, Hoops 2. Goal scorers for hoops were Barry Schilling and Shane Langman (also sent off the field for a period). Goal scorers for Kaniva were Brett Jewel (1 goal) and Braden Clark (2 goals).
