Junior Country Week Results

Success for the Wimmera at Victorian hockey championships
More than seventy players represented the Wimmera region in the annual Victorian Junior Country Hockey Championships held in Melbourne over the first weekend of the school holidays (Saturday 28 June and Sunday 29 June 2008).
The Under 15 B Boys team were successful in winning their division, after defeating a very physical Warrnambool side 3-1 in the final. Captain James Klinge led the charge to regain the lead, with the team trailing 0-1 at half time; scoring from a penalty stroke. Nathan Alexander sealed the game with a deflection into goal from a wide pass into the D. Players had won all four of their games in the lead up to the final, with Jordan Clark scoring an amazing 6 goals in the first match against Ballarat.
In other matches, the Under 15 C boys team finished third overall in their section before going down to the Grampians 3-1 in the playoff for third and fourth. Sean Creek, Bradley Alexander and Marcus Williamson were key players in this team.
The Under 13 Boys team had many players who had never seen a synthetic turf pitch and some who had only played one game of full field hockey. These boys experienced mixed success in their games and ended up in fourth place within their pool. Sam Bone, Michael Pohlner and Nick Crowhurst were key players for this team.
Both Under 17 teams played at the State Hockey Centre on the Sunday, and both teams lost their final game in a penalty shoot out. This means that the team that scores more goals after an even number of Penalty Strokes wins the match. Monique Schwedes and Michelle Farinha fought hard for the Under 17 Girls, while Tom Cook and Jarryd Bendall contributed well for the Under 17 Boys.
Although the Under 15 Girls team did not experience victory, they enjoyed the challenge of playing on turf for the first time. Roey Sanders was solid in defence and first-time goalie Emily Hicks, put in a top performance.
All teams were well supported by a large contingent of parents and relatives who made the trip to Melbourne to encourage the players.

Grand Finals Preview

Hockey premiers to be decided
Kaniva Hockey Club will host three Wimmera Hockey Association premiership matches this Saturday 6 September 2008 at the Kaniva Recreation Reserve, and there will be plenty of great hockey action.

--------------------
2008 Junior Grand Final at 11am
Dimboola Kangaroos versus Yanac Warriors

2008 Women's Grand Final at 1pm
Horsham Highlanders versus Dimboola Women

2008 Men's Grand Final at 3pm
Yanac Tigers versus Horsham Hurricanes
--------------------

Premiership shields will be presented at the end of each match, while medallions and other awards including best and fairest awards will be presented at the presentation dinner at the Kaniva Shire Hall on Saturday evening from 6pm.
No reigning premiership teams will be contesting the grand finals this year since Leopards, Warrack Women and Hoops all bowed out last week in the preliminary finals round. The finals will see however all three runner up teams from last year contesting, and all three are looking the dominant teams this year.
Kangaroos lost to Leopards on the big day last year but have been dominant this year, winning all of their matches this year except the one they lost to Warriors, whom they will meet this weekend.
Warriors have done well to come up from third place on the ladder to make the final. Warriors are workhorses who draw their whole team into play including their younger members. This has benefited them in the past including in their determined win in the preliminary finals last week. They will need to play well all over the field to combat a very strong Dimboola outfit.
Highlanders are looking the favourites in the women’s competition at this point. They were runners up to Warrack last year and will be looking to go one better.
Highlanders have dominated the women’s competition this season winning 16 out of 17 home and away matches. They have won three out of four of their encounters with Dimboola during the season, although Dimboola Women are the only team to have come close to them, drawing with them in one match.
Highlanders are playing great hockey from one end of the field to the other and Dimboola had no answers for that in the semis with Highlanders taking a convincing win. Will nerves get the better of either team in the big final? With Warrack Women out of the final this year it leaves a more open playing field and it may come down to the better team on the day, rather than which team has more finals experience.
Highlanders do not usually win by large margins, rather working the ball well having trained their team from the ground up, passing well and playing strong consistent hockey.
Dimboola had a close win last week sneaking through the preliminary finals after a determined performance in the deciding strokes. However it does not matter which path teams take to get into the grand final, it can sometimes depend how they play on the day. Dimboola will know that and they will also have their eye on the prize now that they are so close. If Dimboola scores first this could be an even match and a great women’s final.
Tigers have been strong all season winning with some big scores but have also had some close calls and even some losses against some of the lower placed teams. Hoops gave them a bit of a scare in the semi finals but they pulled through.
Hurricanes are the slight underdogs in this match coming up from third position on the ladder and winning their way through to the final.
Tigers have beaten Hurricanes once this season but they have drawn in their last two encounters. Tigers will need to take nothing for granted this weekend and this could be a great match.
Good luck to all teams contesting. Play hard and play fair.

Preliminary Finals Review

Reigning premiers all bow out of hockey finals
No reigning premiers will contest the Wimmera Hockey Association 2008 grand finals after all three bowed out after some exciting preliminary finals at Yanac on Saturday.
Reigning premiers Leopards, Warrack Women and Hoops all lost their preliminary finals.
Warriors, Dimboola Women and Hurricanes have won their way through.
After sitting second on the junior ladder nearly all season Nhill Leopards bow out after losing their match to Yanac Warriors, who were a close second on the ladder.
Both the Warriors and Leopards defence worked over time in the wet conditions although Warriors had more shots at goal. Nathan Alexander scored for Warriors giving them a 1-0 lead at half time.
Warriors came out hard in the second half with Sam Bone scoring two goals. Michelle Farinha scored for Leopards. The match finished 3-1 to Warriors.
Best for Warriors were Sam Bone, Alex Wheaton, and Nathan and Bradley Alexander. Jack Janetzki, goalie Alex Welsh and Alannah Creek worked hard for Leopards.
Warriors spread the workload around their whole team and the efforts have paid off with them earning a place in the grand final next week.
Warrack Women will not get the chance to defend their title after losing to Dimboola Women in a very close game which was eventually decided by strokes. It is a rare occasion when the Warrack Women do not contest a grand final! This will give other teams a chance to share in the glory this year.
Warrack had finished third on the final ladder behind Dimboola.
Elizabeth Klinge scored early off a short to put Dimboola in front. Sue Puls did likewise just seconds before half time for Warrack.
About 15 minutes into the second half Sue Puls scored through another short corner to put Warrack in front. But their glory was shortlived with Adina King scrambling one through for Dimboola.
Scores were locked at 2-2 at full time, and no score was made in extra time.
In the deciding strokes Dimboola succeeded through Michelle Searle, Jess Ross and Elizabeth Klinge. Warracknabeal missed their first three strokes giving Dimboola the victory.
The final score was 5-2 to Dimboola giving them the grand final berth.
Jennifer Klinge, Elizabeth Klinge and Michelle Searle were best for Dimboola, while Alana Argent, goalie Kate Perkins and Teagan Hollan were best for Warrack.
Hurricanes have been quiet achievers this season sitting in third spot on the final ladder. They have beaten top teams although also succumbing to weaker teams. The men’s competition has been sometimes unpredictable this season including this win to Hurricanes. Hoops finished second on the men’s ladder ahead of Hurricanes.
There was very fast skilful play by both teams in the first half of their match which made the ground look dry. Horsham scored late in the first half.
The game continued to be fast and skilful into the second half with Horsham scoring through a good piece of team play early in the half. Warrack fought back hard to score with five minutes to go, through Jarrod Knoop. Warrack had penalty corners up to the end of play but were unable to convert.
Hurricanes took the win 2-1, and with it the final place in the grand finals.
Stuart Hoffman and Ben Schwedes scored Hurricanes’ goals while their best players were Will Hewitt, goalie Steve Grose and Luke Dunn.
Paul Slater, Scott Morrow, Stephen Laverty and Jarrod Knoop were best for Hoops.

Preliminary Finals Preview

Battle on for final spots in hockey grand finals
Teams will do battle in three Wimmera Hockey Association preliminary final matches at Yanac this Saturday to determine who will play in the grand final matches next week.

--------------------
At 11am:
Leopards versus Warriors

At 1pm:
Dimboola Women versus Warrack Women

At 3pm:
Hoops versus Hurricanes
--------------------

Every minute and opportunity of these matches will be crucial in what could be some very even hockey. The winners will meet teams who have already won their way through to the big final after last week’s semi finals.
At 11am Nhill Leopards will play Yanac Warriors in the junior preliminary final. The winner of this match will meet Dimboola Kangaroos in the grand final.
Warriors have some handy scorers in Bradley and Nathan Alexander and Sam Bone. These players together with Erin Blackwood and Alex Wheaton have been a strength behind the team and they will all have to work hard and use their younger players to combat the attack from Leopards.
Leopards have strength across the board while more senior players like Jack Janetzki, Talor Dent, Sarah Wallis and goalie Alex Welsh will work hard and look to main scorer Ben Smith to be on target.
Leopards have won two of their encounters during the season while the other result was a draw. However, Warriors are the only team to have beaten the top side Kangaroos this season and are never to be discounted.
At 1pm Dimboola Women and Warrack Women will play in the women’s preliminary final. The winner of this match will meet Horsham Highlanders in the grand final.
These two teams have won one game against the other this season while the last encounter between them in round 15 ended in a draw. Warrack has been strengthening during the season after a shaky start to the season when they lost their first match 9-0.
Dimboola will want to score a couple of early goals to put Warrack on the backfoot, but everyone knows that Warrack can score a goal or two under pressure. Sue Puls and Karen Triffitt between them have scored more than half of Warrack’s goals between them this season and could be a thorn in Dimboola’s side. Alana Argent and Linley Arnold-Wardle have been a strength behind the scorers along with several experienced finals players.
Elizabeth Klinge, Michelle Searle and Jess Ross will need to work hard for Dimboola and push into attack from early on. They will need their top scorer Adina King to be on target and make use of all opportunities. Defender Cara Elsom has also been a strength behind the women especially in recent rounds.
Dimboola has been leading Warrack on the ladder but no matter how they have been playing during the season Warrack always seem to get it together at finals time, so Dimboola best be on their guard, keep a level head and work together.
At 3pm Warrack Hoops will play Horsham Hurricanes in the men’s preliminary final. The winner will meet Yanac Tigers in the grand final.
Hoops have had the upper hand over Hurricanes during the season although Hurricanes did come away with one win when Hoops were not at their strongest. A draw in their last encounter however, which was only two weeks ago in the last home and away match, could be an indicator of a close match.
Hoops have several players very capable of scoring and Hurricanes defenders Will Hewitt and Richard Kemp will need to be ready. Goalie Steve Grose was last year’s men’s best and fairest and will need to be at his best for Hurricanes in this match. Hurricanes have also shared the goals around although Andrew Dorman has proved himself handy up forward.
Jarrod Knoop and Paul Slater have been a strength behind Hoops this season and can both score goals.
The whole team from Horsham will need to work together if they want a spot in the final. Reigning premiers Hoops will be on fire to try for a spot to defend their title.

Semi Finals Review

Top teams take first hockey grand final berths
The top teams in each division have won their way through to take the first berths in Wimmera Hockey Association’s grand finals after semi finals matches were played on Saturday at Horsham.
Tigers, Highlanders and Kangaroos have the first grand final spots. Each finished on top of their respective ladders at the end of home and away matches.
Tigers defeated Hoops in a close men’s qualifying final. Hoops took the game to them on Saturday and gave them a scare starting off well with good team work. Hoops scored first blood but Tigers answered the call ten minutes after. The scores were level at half time.
A dramatic injury from a collision of players saw Yanac’s Kim Croot knocked out and he left the field for the remainder of the game.
Tigers worked their way back to take the win 3-2 and earn the first grand final berth.
Michael Dart, Adam Clohesy and Kim Croot scored for Tigers. Tammy Goyne and Shane Langman scored for Hoops.
Highlanders had an emphatic win in the women’s qualifying final 5-1 over Dimboola Women. Dimboola had the majority of early play but could not capitalise. After their nervous start Highlanders scored a strong field goal late in the half through Carmel McFarlane who scrambled another off a short corner to take the lead 2-0 at half time.
Highlanders dominated the second half with excellent passing bringing all players into the game. They scored through Kate Ferrier, Ellie Morrow and Rebecca Batchelor.
Dimboola struggled for a team on the day and were buoyed by some juniors. They kept trying and scored one through Lisa Robson, but they were no match for Highlanders’ determination.
Top junior side Kangaroos is looking very strong after their big 5-0 win over Nhill side Leopards, who beat them in last year’s grand final.
The Dimboola juniors scored three goals in the first despite good defence by Nhill keeping the ball mostly midfield. They scored a further two goals as they dominated the second half.
Nathan Jorgensen scored twice while Michael Pohlner and brothers Brydon and Brett Tischler also scored in the win.
Kaniva Men bow out of the season after a disappointing 3-2 loss to Horsham Hurricanes in the men’s elimination final.
The undermanned Kaniva side, due to a wedding on the day, were propped up by three juniors as allowed by the association executive for this finals series. The juniors had each played their own junior final for Raiders before taking to the field in the last match of the day to help the men barely field a team.
Both teams created goods scoring chances with Horsham creating structured forward play and Kaniva playing a fast open game. Horsham scored from scrambly field play to take a 1-0 lead at the break.
Hurricanes scored early in the second half but Kaniva never gave up scoring twice through Meyer brothers Fergus and Kendal to draw level. The match was on but Hurricanes scored the winner with two minutes to go.
Will Hewitt, Ryan Robson and Paul Mackereth scored Hurricanes’ goals.
Warrack Women scored early through Karen Triffitt in their elimination match against Yanac Women. Yanac had their chances to score in a slow paced game but were thwarted by good defence from Warrack.
Yanac had more chances to score early in the second half but could not find the back of the net. A strong goal from Jenny Gaulke late in the match sealed the win for Warrack, 2-0.
In the junior elimination final Warriors got a good start over Raiders scoring in the first minute through Bradley Alexander. Even play followed for the half and early into the second. Sam Bone through some clever play flicked one passed the goalie. Raiders were tiring while Warriors lifted and it wasn’t long before Nathan Alexander got one through. Sam Bone snuck in his second just before the whistle to take the win 4-0.

Semi Finals Preview

Hockey finals begin at Horsham
Wimmera Hockey Association finals series starts this Saturday with six semi-final matches at Horsham racecourse from 11am. All six clubs will be represented in the semi-finals.
--------------------
At 11am:
Highlanders play Dimboola Women in the women’s qualifying final.
Warriors play Raiders in the junior elimination final.
At 1pm:
Tigers play Hoops in the men’s qualifying final.
Kangaroos play Leopards in the junior qualifying final.
At 3pm:
Warrack Women play Yanac Women in the women’s elimination final.
Hurricanes play Kaniva Men in the men’s elimination final.
--------------------
Highlanders have dominated the women’s competition this season winning 16 out of 17 home and away matches. Highlanders have won three out of four of their encounters with Dimboola during the season, although Dimboola Women are the only team to have come close to them, drawing with them in one match. This will be a fierce competition battling for the first berth in the women’s grand final.
Warrack Women have won all three of their encounters with Yanac this season, although Yanac have done well in the last two only losing by one goal each. This could be a close match and the Yanac side will battle hard.
Warriors came close a top two spot on the junior ladder and will play hard against Raiders to further their season campaign. The teams have drawn twice while Raiders had the upper hand in their last encounter. It should be a close match and teams should be prepared to go to extra time or more. The winner of this match will play in the preliminary final next week.
Nhill will be pinning their finals hopes on their junior side Leopards, being the only Nhill side to play hockey finals this year. A win in their match would give them an immediate grand final berth, however they have not beaten the top side Kangaroos this year. Not since they beat them in the grand final last season. The tables may be turned this year and could make for an interesting rematch with a slightly different lineup.
The only side to have beaten Kangaroos this year is the Yanac Warriors who still have to get passed Kaniva Raiders in the junior elimination final.
Hoops won their first encounter with Tigers but Tigers have won their last two, the latest a convincing 6-2. Hoops are the reigning premiers having defeated Tigers in the final last year. Tigers will be wanting to secure their berth for another chance at the premiership.
Hurricanes have won two close encounters with Kaniva Men this year while the other was a draw. This one could come down to the wire with no second chances here.
Good luck to all teams playing in the 2008 finals series. Play hard but fair!

Round 17 Review

Yanac Women sneak into the finals
Yanac Women will take the fourth spot in the women’s finals despite losing 1-0 to the struggling Thunderbirds in the final round of the home and away season at Nhill. Thunderbirds got the only score of the match through young Sarah Wallis although play went both ways.
Grace McLeod did best for Thunderbirds while Sarah Coughlan worked hard for Yanac.
Yanac’s loss does not matter however following Kaniva Women’s 4-1 loss to Dimboola Women. This leaves Yanac and Kaniva equal on points but Yanac with a five-goal advantage which is enough to sneak them into the finals.
Elizabeth Klinge scored twice and was Dimboola’s best. Claire McDonald was best for Kaniva, also scoring their loan goal.
In the other women’s match Highlanders defeated Warrack Women 2-0 giving them an impressive unbeaten record for the home and away season of 16 wins and one draw. Highlanders have only had seven goals scored against them this year. Kate Ferrier scored and starred for the victors while Julie Langman was strong for Warrack.
Leopards took a 2-1 win over Warriors to secure their second spot on the junior ladder ahead of Warriors. Talor Dent topped the field for Leopards in the win while twins Nathan and Bradley Alexander were best for Warriors. Nathan scored their goal.
The bottom of the ladder junior competitors Kookaburras and Bombers played each other in their final matches of the season but both teams played with determination. It was an even competition with both sides scoring multiple goals, through seven different players. The end result was 5-3 in favour of Kookaburras and a good match to end both teams’ playing season. Jamie Guerin shone for Kookaburras also scoring one of their goals. Monique Schwedes stood out for Bombers, scoring two of their goals.
The luckless Bombers have lost all their matches this season but have been formidable opponents and will take their experience into the next season.
Raiders took the lead in their match against Kangaroos but the top team came back with a vengeance winning 5-2. Raiders will take fourth spot in the junior finals. Meaghan Pohlner was best for Kangaroos while Kendal Meyer was best for Raiders.
Dimboola Men have scored their third best result for the season, after a tight match with Kaniva Men finished in a 3-3 draw. It was Dimboola’s last match for the year and they gave it their all getting the early score and making Kaniva work hard to even the match. Clint Beattie topped the field for Kaniva while Beau Lovett was best for Dimboola.
Hurricanes and Hoops also had a draw which shows how close the competition is going into the finals next week. They finished 2-2. Hoops finish second on the ladder and Hurricanes third. Will Hewitt was best for Hurricanes while Paul Slater was best for Hoops.
Tigers had a more convincing win 4-0 over Nhill Men who bow out of the competition at this point, finishing in fifth place. Tigers have a strong scoring contingent scoring through four players. Josh Cramer was best for Tigers. Trevor James was best for Nhill.

Round 17 Preview

Top two junior spot still up for grabs
Warriors and Leopards will compete for the top two spot on the junior ladder in the final round of the Wimmera Hockey Association home and away season when they clash at Nhill’s Davis Park this Saturday.
Nhill Leopards are currently in second spot but with only a four-point buffer a win to Yanac Warriors could possibly see this order change. Warriors would need to win by at least two goals.
If Leopards win or the result is a draw Leopards will retain their second spot and the enviable double chance in the finals which start next week. Warriors would retain third spot.
In their round one encounter Leopards won 4-2 but by round eight Warriors were strengthening and the teams drew 2-2. Anything could happen this week in round 17.
Raiders will play top team Kangaroos and even though Kangaroos are the stronger team it will make no difference to Raiders’ fourth position, except perhaps to their level of confidence going into the finals next week.
In the other junior match Bombers play Kookaburras in a clash of the bottom of the ladder. Neither team will make the finals this year but will still play with determination in their final matches of the season.
Revengers finish in the middle of the junior ladder and have the bye this week.
Can Highlanders finish their 2008 home and away season unbeaten or will Warrack Women end their run in the final match before finals? Warrack are still on the improve while top Highlanders remain consistent. The Horsham side’s worst result so far this season has been one draw.
There is still a slim but unlikely chance that Kaniva Women could get a finals berth but they would have to either draw with Dimboola or hope Yanac would lose to Thunderbirds. Thunderbirds have struggled all year to field a consistent team let alone score many goals so Yanac will be the probable victors of their match. Dimboola should be too strong for Kaniva and will also be looking to gain a few more points to secure their top two spot considering Warrack is only two points behind them.
The order of the men’s ladder cannot change now. Kaniva Men play Dimboola Men who will play their last match for the season, also Nhill Men when they play top team Tigers. Hurricanes and Hoops will meet and they will possibly play in two weeks time in the preliminary final depending on next week’s results.

Rules Session #1 - 2008

Report for Wimmera Hockey visit 3 May 2008
Saturday May 3rd, Mark Frost and I traveled to Nhill to conduct an umpiring clinic and assessing day. We conduct two rules session, one for umpires and coaches and second for parents and players. Each session had around thirty five attendees. As both sessions were running concurrently this is a fantastic effort for Wimmera Hockey Association and they must be congratulated for such an excellent turnout. We arrived at 9.00am to work with umpires appointed to junior games and provided tutoring for these games. At midday the two rules sessions had been arranged and Mark Frost and I presented the rules sessions. Mark conducted the session for parents and players in the Football Clubroom while I present the rules clinic in the Netball Clubrooms. Both sessions were well attended and the response for participants was fantastic, It was great to be able to spend time with each group and their needs were different. The players and parents session was conducted to provide information on rules and as an education process for the association members, whilst the coaches and umpires session was targeted towards the knowledge and specific issues that effect umpiring and player welfare within the association. Speaking with Mark he was delighted with the response from parents and their desire to learn what the basic rules of the game were. With games starting at 9.00 am and continuing until 6.30pm we had a busy day viewing ten local umpires for assessments and providing tutoring and mentoring for some umpires that have just started. To these five umpires we look forward to seeing the development and skills base increase with more experience. The grounds were excellent and for grassroots hockey the Wimmera Hockey Association and local councils must have a good working relationship.
All the community umpires that have not completed theory online will do so over the coming weeks and will pass this information onto me when completed. The recommendations for beginner umpires were conducted on suitable games and all umpires demonstrated appropriate skills. This will allow Wimmera Hockey to extend the knowledge base for umpire development and assist with the HockeyEd program for community assessments. Several umpires need to complete the Beginner online theory and they will also follow the above format. Five umpires will be updating accreditation next season so we have already completed practicals for these. I have left with Wimmera Hockey a detailed plan for the umpiring sector to work with and through, this includes a five step program, umpiring program, accreditation process and benefits, game management and signals documentation and a mentoring program and the requirements for usage. This will allow the long-term development of the system we started last year and will assist this association to develop a pathway for their umpires and ensure they receive the support and assistance they need. I would like to thank Launa Schilling and the Wimmera Hockey for their efforts and the hospitality they extended over the course of the day. To the players, coaches and umpires thank you for your assistance and responsiveness towards umpire development I have attached several photos from the weekend for your usage. Yours truly,

Round 16 Review

Yanac Women move into fourth spot
Yanac moves ahead of Kaniva on the women’s ladder after defeating them in a close battle in Wimmera Hockey Association’s round 16 at Horsham on Saturday.
The first half was very even but Yanac made the most of limited opportunities scrambling a goal through Sheree May. Yanac’s momentum continued until the break. Even play followed in the second half with both teams setting up good scoring chances and were rewarded with one goal each. Natalie Farmers scored for Yanac before Kayla Saunderson scored one back for Kaniva with a solid hit on a short corner. The match ended in Yanac’s favour 2-1.
Mandy Falting, Sarah Coughlan and Mikaela Jago were Yanac’s best. Kayla Saunderson, Claire McDonald and Kelsey Webb worked hard for Kaniva.
Yanac is now equal on points with Kaniva but has a three-goal advantage with one round to go.
Highlanders continue to surge ahead on the women’s ladder after defeating their nearest counterparts 3-0. Highlanders scored early through Ellie Morrow but were not dominating. Dimboola Women were unable to make use of their forward moves due to Highlanders’ solid defence. Michelle Searle was strong for Dimboola while Jac Zordan was best for Highlanders.
Warrack Women took advantage of an undermanned Thunderbirds side, dominating play. Nhill did score one goal through Grace McLeod. It was one way traffic in the second half. Warrack should have scored several more in their 7-1 win. Jenny Gaulke was best for Warrack while young Brittany Dickinson was awarded best for Nhill.
Leopards move back into the number two position on the junior ladder after a 4-0 win over Revengers. Both sides showed great team work. Ben Smith scored two goals and was best for Leopards. Mark Hewitt was strong for Revengers.
Kangaroos dominated Bombers winning 6-0. Bombers had a few quick runs up the field but were unable to score. Nathan Jorgensen scored twice and was best for Kangaroos. Sean Creek did well for Bombers.
Warriors lost their match 5-3 to Raiders and now slip back into third spot. It was a fast attacking game with good skills from both sides. Warriors had an early lead with speed through the Alexander twins and two goals while Erin Blackwood was solid in defence. Raiders came back in the second half scoring five goals with excellent team play, with their younger players stepping up and making a difference. Kendal Meyer was best for Raiders while Nathan Alexander best served Warriors.
Kaniva Men were not strong enough for top team Tigers who took the win 3-0 in a fast paced match. Simon Farmers was best for the victors. Clint Beattie was best for Kaniva.
Rain met the later men’s matches. Nhill Men made Hoops work hard in a fiery game with plenty of play midfield. Both teams displayed good defence with Warrack only penetrating Nhill’s once through Scott Morrow to win 1-0. Jarrod Knoop shone for Hoops while Jarryd Bendall did well for Nhill.
Nhill’s loss puts them out of a chance for the final four in the men’s competition.
Dimboola Men gave Hurricanes a run for their money with a majority of early play. Good work in the circle led to good goals to James Klinge and Josh Halsall. Hurricanes stepped up the pressure after the break and persistent attack eventually led to a goal and then another not long after. With only minutes to go Ben Schwedes scored for Hurricanes to win the game 3-2. Richard Kemp defended well for Horsham while Beau Lovett gave Dimboola good drive. Richard Kemp and Luke Dunn scored Horsham’s other goals.

Round 16 Preview

Kaniva and Yanac women do battle for finals berth
Kaniva and Yanac women’s teams will do battle for a finals berth when they meet this Saturday in Wimmera Hockey Association’s round 16 at Horsham.
It is an important match for both sides with the winner likely to take the fourth spot in the finals. Kaniva is currently in fourth spot after claiming the four points last week, benefiting from a forfeit. Kaniva is only four points ahead of Yanac. Yanac’s six-goal loss last week brought the goal difference between the two teams to only one goal with Yanac the slight advantage. With the final match next week, which statistically Yanac is likely to win against Thunderbirds and Kaniva is likely to lose against Dimboola Women, their match this week could well be the decider of which team will play finals this season.
If there is a draw this week, Kaniva Women would have to at least draw against Dimboola next week to be assured of a finals berth. That may be a tough ask.
Kaniva and Yanac women’s teams have met twice this season, drawing 0-0 in round two and Yanac the upper hand in round 12 winning a close 2-1. Yanac have been strengthening as the season wears on may have the upper hand this week, but whatever the outcome it will be a great match of hockey.
With only one round to go after this match, whichever team wins this week may prove to be the more deserving team to play in the finals series.
Highlanders, Dimboola Women and Warrack Women have already secured their places in finals.
This week Dimboola will meet Highlanders who they will be likely to play in the semi finals. There will be some hot hockey in this match.
Warrack will meet Nhill Thunderbirds.
Although the top four teams on the junior ladder are set their positions could still alter this week. Warriors and Leopards are tied on points but Warriors have a goal difference advantage of four goals placing them second and Leopards third. Warriors play Raiders this week and this could be a close match. Warriors will have the fire behind them with a lot at stake at this stage of the season.
Leopards play Revengers who had a good win last week over Raiders and should be on fire again. It may not be enough to combat Leopards who have been consistent this year and will be looking to reclaim their top two spot on the ladder.
In the other junior match, Bombers will have a hard task against the top team Kangaroos.
In the men’s competition the final four positions are unlikely to change now with Tigers on top, Hoops, Hurricanes and Kaniva Men in the top four. Matches will nevertheless still be fast and furious with Kaniva Men taking on Tigers, Nhill Men playing Hoops and Dimboola Men something to prove when they play Hurricanes.
Junior side Kookaburras has the bye.

Round 15 Review

Warriors sneak into hockey top two
Warriors have sneaked into second spot on the junior ladder after a close win in Wimmera Hockey Association’s round 15 of competition at Warracknabeal’s Anzac Park.
They are a whisker ahead of Nhill side Leopards who had been second all season except for one week in top spot, now third and separated only by goal difference with Warriors having a small four-goal advantage.
Warriors played a close match on Saturday, narrowly defeating the weaker Dimboola side Kookaburras. Warriors were very attacking but Kookaburras had some scoring shots. Kookaburras goalie Kobi Villis was very strong, although Warriors did well with their opportunities and were 2-0 up at the break. Warriors slowed the pace in the second half although still scoring one goal, while Kookaburras picked up and were able to score two goals. Both teams had many scoring opportunities but the game finished in Warriors’ favour 3-2.
The Alexander brothers did the scoring for Warriors – Nathan with two and Bradley the other. Nathan Alexander was best along with Sam Bone. James Keating and Caleb Halsall scored for Kookaburras, while Kobi Villis and Olinda Elsom were best.
Revengers scored a big win over Raiders 4-1. Strong teamwork from Warracknabeal saw Mark Hewitt and Bonnie Crafter score early. Raiders’ Kendal Meyer passed well through the centre while Liam Wallis showed strong control in the slow and wet conditions.
In the second half strong attack and consistent intercepts by Marcus Williamson and Megan Watts made their mark on the game for Revengers. Ashleigh Wallis scored a lovely goal passed from the opposite side for Raiders’ loan goal. Both teams made a very consistent effort given the wet surface.
Marcus Williamson and Mark Moloney shone for the victors while Donna Robinson and Mark Moloney scored their other goals. Kendal Meyer and Liam Wallis shone for Kaniva.
Kangaroos took a solid win over Leopards 3-1. Dimboola had most of the play through James Klinge and Nathan Jorgensen. Talor Dent defended well in the cold conditions while teammates goalie Alex Welsh and Jack Janetzki also stood out for Leopards. All goals were scored in the first half – James Klinge, Nathan Jorgensen and Michael Pohlner for Dimboola, and Ben Smith for Nhill. It was a better half from Nhill in the second. Both sides had equal opportunity but just couldn’t score.
Horsham Highlanders scored another solid win, 6-0 over Yanac Women. Carmel McFarlane stood out for Horsham on Saturday, while Sarah Coughlan worked hard for Yanac.
It was a tight match between Warrack and Dimboola women with Dimboola defender Cara Elsom playing best for her team, while attacker Alana Argent was best for Warrack. The game was leveled at 2-2.
Nhill Thunderbirds forfeited to Kaniva Women.
The men’s competition saw close games all-round showing an evenness of competition with all lower-placed teams strengthening towards the end of the season.
Second-placed Hoops had a narrow victory in the men’s competition with a 1-0 win over the young Dimboola side with the loan field goal scored by Brant Peters for Warrack with three minutes to go. Both sides had shown consistency of ball passing given the bounce of the field. Long passes found easy targets and this generated good play. Stephen Laverty and Simon King shone for Hoops, while Beau Lovett and Tim Jorgensen did well for Dimboola Men. This match benefited from the umpiring skills of Regional Umpires Coach for Hockey Victoria Charlie Martin who along with Mark Frost conducted the Rules Session and umpiring clinic during the day.
Top Tigers and third-placed Hurricanes drew 2-2 with all goals scored well. Kim Croot shone for Tigers while Will Hewitt defended well for Hurricanes. Mark Frost was an umpire in this match, which was evenly contested with well-mannered play.
Kaniva Men also had a narrow 1-0 win over Nhill Men. Young Kendal Meyer shone for Kaniva while Mathew McDonald scored the goal. Jarryd Bendall was strong for Nhill. Kaniva needed this win to help cement their chance to play in finals.

Round 15 Preview

Time changes for Wimmera hockey matches this weekend for Rules Session
Wimmera Hockey Association’s nine round fifteen matches will be played at Warracknabeal’s Anzac Park this Saturday, with a Rules Session a feature of the day, although with three rounds to go there are some finals positions still available in each of the three divisions which should make for some hot hockey action and plenty of skills will be on show.
In the women’s competition the final four could still change if Kaniva gets back on top of Yanac. The men’s top four could change order dramatically if Hoops were knocked out of second spot and Nhill are still a possibility to jump into the top four. The junior top four are all but set with Kangaroos, Leopards, Warriors and Raiders, although the enviable top two spots are still up for grabs.
The Rules Session this Saturday will be the second for the season, following up on the well-attended session held at Nhill during round four. The times of all round fifteen games have also been altered to accommodate the Rules Session to be held in the middle part of the day.
Regional Umpires Coach for Hockey Victoria Charlie Martin and Mark Frost will be in attendance for the session, as well as during the day for umpire instruction.
The hockey association would like to emphasise the importance of such sessions for the future of country hockey, and have altered the game times so there will again be no matches being played at the time of the session, so that everyone is free to attend.
Everyone including players, umpires, coaches, parents and interested parties are strongly encouraged to attend, especially those who missed the session earlier in the season.
Matches will therefore start from 9am with home junior side Revengers playing Raiders.
At 10.30am Warriors play Kookaburras, and top two junior teams Kangaroos and Leopards will meet at the same time. If Warriors win and Leopards lose then Warriors will jump into second spot on the junior ladder ahead of Leopards. Warriors likely will win their match against the weaker side Kookaburras, but it could be a close match between Kangaroos and Leopards.
The Rules Session will take place from 12 noon till 1pm at the Warracknabeal venue.
At 1pm Yanac Women will have a tough match against Highlanders. At the same time it will be a tight match between Warrack Women and Dimboola Women.
Matches at 2.30pm will be Thunderbirds and Kaniva Women, with a good showdown between Nhill Men and Kaniva Men. Kaniva Women and Nhill Men will both need to win their matches if they want a chance to play finals this season. At the same time Kaniva Men would do well to take the points to help secure their spot in finals.
A slightly late start at 4pm will see Tigers strong against Hurricanes, while Hoops should have the advantage over Dimboola Men. With three rounds to go the results of these two matches could be crucial to the final men’s ladder. An upset result in either match, although not likely, could be the difference for Hoops and Hurricanes in getting a spot in the top two and a second chance come finals time.
Junior team Bombers has the bye.
Note: For this Saturday’s matches players and families are asked to not use the usual carpark off Scott Street (main street). Instead please use the alternate entrances to the park.

Round 14 Review

Hoops take a close win
Kaniva Men and Hoops played a good fast and open game on a heavy field at Kaniva in Wimmera Hockey Association’s round 14. Both teams used long hits to advantage. Good goalkeeping by Matthew Wallis kept Hoops to one goal at half time. Brett Jewell evened the scored for Kaniva.
In a high standard game Hoops had the better of the play early in the second half and scored two goals before Kaniva rallied and scored through Kendal Meyer. Hoops held on for a good 3-2 win. Jarrod Knoop, Tammy Goyne and Barry Schilling scored for Hoops. Stephen Laverty and Paul Slater were best for Hoops, while Clint Beattie and Matthew Wallis excelled for Kaniva.
Saturday’s win gives Hoops an outright hold on second spot on the men’s ladder ahead of Hurricanes with three rounds to go. Kaniva Men are fourth.
At Dimboola, Nhill Men scored their fourth win of the season which puts them only four points and goal percentage outside a chance to play in finals with three rounds to go – a not impossible task. Horsham scored in the first five minutes through Ashley Clark to put Nhill under pressure but Nhill fought back and scored in the following five minutes and continued to apply pressure for the rest of the first half, eventually winning the game 2-1. Adrian Creek and young Jack Janetzki scored Nhill’s goals, while Allan King and Jarryd Bendall were best. Will Hewitt and Stuart Hoffman were Hurricanes’ best.
Tigers beat Dimboola Men by five goals. Dimboola was able to score through Basil Jorgensen who was also best for the team on Saturday. Kim Croot was best for Yanac. Tigers shared the goals around five players. The 6-1 win all but cements Tigers’ top spot on the ladder for the season.
Top women’s team Highlanders began strongly but failed to score against Thunderbirds until late in the half through left wing Sarah O’Connor. Nhill was unlucky not to even the score late in the half. Sarah O’Connor scored again in the second half for the 2-0 win. Robyn Creek was best for Highlanders. Anna Rowe was best for Thunderbirds. This gives Highlanders their 13th win out of 14 matches.
Second-placed Dimboola Women had a close 1-0 win over fourth-placed Yanac Women who are improving as the season wears on. Dimboola had the majority of early attack and scored through Adina King. The second half saw good fast hockey with Yanac lifting. It was desperate hockey in the end with both teams having countless chances, but to no avail. Centre halves Elizabeth Klinge for Dimboola and Sarah Coughlan for Yanac were best.
It was a good even match between Kaniva and third-placed Warrack Women, finishing in Warrack’s favour 3-2. Linley Arnold-Wardle with one goal was best for Warrack. Donna Meyer was best for Kaniva.
The two Dimboola junior teams Kangaroos and Kookaburras played with good passing and teamwork in good sportsmanship despite an apparent domination by top team Kangaroos, who won 9-0. Nathan Jorgensen shone for the victors while goalie Kobi Villis worked hard for Kookaburras.
Second and third-placed Leopards and Raiders were evenly matched and consistent scoring a goal each in both halves. Raiders came out firing in the second half but Leopards matched the pace finishing 2-2. Kendal Meyer was top for Raiders while goalie Alex Welsh was best for Leopards.
Revengers were quick off the mark against Bombers scoring four goals in the first half. Bombers scored one and were the only team to score in the second half. Revengers won 4-2. Marc Hewitt scored a goal and was best for Revengers. Defenders Jahan Randall-Demllo and Claire Barnett were best for Bombers.

Round 14 Preview

Split round for hockey round 14
Kaniva and Dimboola clubs will host Wimmera Hockey Association’s round 14 matches in a split round on Saturday.
At Kaniva from 11am home junior side Raiders will have a tough match against Leopards. Brady Dixon has been quite strong for Raiders and will need to push up where goal scorers Braden Clark and Kendal Meyer will need to be on target in the circle, taking advantage of opportunities. Taylor Dent will work hard for Leopards to stop them and allow his own scorers Ben Smith and Michelle Fahrina to capitalise.
Bombers and Revengers will be evenly matched. The ball will pass between Bombers defenders Jahan Randall-Demllo and Sean Creek and Revengers defender Mark Hewitt, giving plenty of youngsters in the centre opportunity to shine.
Kaniva Women will fight hard for the points against Warrack Women. Kaniva needs the points to get ahead of Yanac Women and into the top four with only four rounds to go. Even a draw would help Kaniva at this stage. Warrack are still strengthening and this match could have an interesting result.
Hoops will want to regroup after being defeated by Tigers last week 6-2 and if they have a full play list will give Kaniva Men a hard time. Hoops may need the win to hold onto their second spot on the ladder, currently sitting on equal points with Hurricanes. If Mathew McDonald works hard and scores for Kaniva the team could do well.
At Dimboola from 9.30am the two junior Dimboola teams will meet again. The weaker side Kookaburras have gained valuable experience during the season, even scoring against second-placed Leopards last week, and will keep top junior side Kangaroos busy.
Yanac Women will be fighting to hold on to their finals berth when they play Dimboola Women. Second-placed Dimboola are strong and may not give away any points this week.
Highlanders have capable players all over the field and will work the ball around Thunderbirds. Anna Rowe, Rosie Wallis and the McLeods have worked hard for Thunderbirds in recent games and will need to dig deep again this week. They would benefit from keeping tabs on Kate Ferrier midfield and Ellie Morrow up forward.
Dimboola Men will have a tough match against top team Tigers who have been dominating all season. A return of Tim and Basil Jorgensen could help boost the Dimboola side.
Hurricanes narrowly defeated Kaniva Men last week and may have a similar result this week against Nhill. Nhill could dig deep however, and are fully capable of scoring especially when Mont Miller has his eye in. Hurricanes defenders Will Hewitt and Richard Kemp will need to be mindful of loose players.
Junior team Warriors has the bye.

Round 13 Review

Tigers take an emphatic win
Top men’s team Tigers sealed an emphatic win over second-placed Hoops which could be a show of what is to come in finals. Tigers won 6-2 in Wimmera Hockey Association’s round 13 at the weekend.
It was a fast and furious start with Tigers having the better of the play. Jarrod Knoop gave Hoops good drive all first half. Kim Croot played well with two goals giving Tigers a 2-0 lead at the break.
Hoops held Tigers early in the second half and scored from a penalty stroke. Tigers settled and scored two goals through good work from Josh Cramer. Hoops scored again before Tigers finished off with two goals. Jamie Harding and Simon Farmers were the other scorers for Tigers. Tammy Goyne and Paul Slater scored for Hoops. Josh Cramer and Kim Croot were best for Tigers. Craig Bowler and Simon King defended well for Hoops.
Dimboola Men and Nhill Men played an even contest. Dimboola had good midfield play but not much attack. Nhill had good all-round play and made good use of chances, either scoring or gaining short corners, winning 2-1. Beau Lovett and James Klinge with one goal were best for Dimboola, while Ross Thurlow and Mont Miller with two goals shone for the victors.
Hurricanes and Kaniva Men also enjoyed an even contest. Hurricanes scored early but then play was mostly midfield. Both teams scored one goal in the second half, with Hurricanes winning 2-1. Mathew McDonald with one goal, and Clint Beattie were best for Kaniva. Will Hewitt and Stuart Hoffman were best for Hurricanes. Andrew Dorman and Paul Mackereth scored for Hurricanes.
Highlanders had a lot of play in the first half but Kaniva’s defence worked hard. Ellie Morrow scored off a short corner before half time. Kaniva put some pressure on Highlanders in the second half but Highlanders were stronger. Launa Schilling scored to seal the win for Highlanders 2-0. Hannah Bedford and Kelsey Webb shone for Kaniva, while Ellie Morrow and Kate Ferrier were best for Horsham.
Yanac and Warrack women both moved the ball fast down the field. Yanac Women had a fair amount of play in the first half but Warrack only need one chance and they eventually scored to take a 1-0 win. Alana Argent who scored the winning goal and Linley Arnold-Wardle were best for Warrack. Jill Kube and Anne Blackwood were best for Yanac.
Dimboola Women scored a solid win 4-1 over Thunderbirds, despite good early attack by Nhill. Anna Rowe and Rosie Wallis were best for Nhill, while Sarah Wallis scored their goal. Vicki Smithyman and Adina King with two goals were best for Dimboola. Lisa Robson and Taanya Aitken scored the other goals.
Warriors defeated Revengers after a close contest. Warriors attacked strongly but came up against a tough defence in Revengers. Warriors slipped one through in the second half for the 1-0 win. Nathan Alexander was best for Warriors, while defender Mark Hewitt was best for Revengers.
Raiders scored three goals each half and defeated Bombers 6-0. Bombers tried hard to restrict Kaniva’s advances. Brady Dixon and Braden Clark with three goals were best for Raiders. Kendal Meyer, Jordan Clark and Brandon Rich scored the other goals. Defenders Jahan Randall-Demllo and Sean Creek were best for Bombers.
Leopards and Kookaburras both had scoring chances, with Kookaburra’s Zoe Aitken scoring early in the first half. Leopards’ Ben Smith converted a penalty stroke to even the half. The second half was also even except for a five-minute blitz by Leopards, with Ben Smith and Michelle Fahrina each scoring a field goal for a 3-1 win. Taylor Dent and Michelle Fahrina shone for the victors while Jay Meehan and Ashlee Crowhurst were best for Kookaburras.

Round 13 Preview

Finals spot still up for grabs
Yanac will host all nine round thirteen Wimmera hockey matches on lush green fields this Saturday.
With five home and away rounds to go teams will be starting to think about finals.
The women’s final four could come down to the last couple of rounds with Kaniva and Yanac competing for the fourth spot. They are only separated by goal difference at the moment with Yanac slightly ahead after they beat Kaniva when they played last week. Women’s teams will play each team once more in the final five rounds giving Yanac and Kaniva equal chance to get ahead on points, although Yanac has a six-goal advantage at this point.
The top four are currently Highlanders, Dimboola Women, Warrack Women and Yanac Women.
The men’s and junior ladders are not yet set but neither is likely to change. The top four men’s teams are currently Tigers, Hoops, Hurricanes and Kaniva Men, while the top four on the junior ladder are Kangaroos, Leopards, Warriors and Raiders.
Kaniva Women will have a tough time on Saturday against Highlanders, who will be disappointed to have had their winning streak ended last week. The side remains unbeaten, having won the first eleven matches this season before a draw with Dimboola Women in the last round.
Dimboola Women will be strengthened after that draw and will be starting to eye a spot in the final. They will be too strong for Thunderbirds, who have been struggling somewhat this season.
Yanac Women have won their last two games but will need to score early this week against Warrack Women if they want another win.
Tigers and Hoops will have a tough match, although Tigers usually have the edge, creating more scoring opportunities.
Dimboola Men will be spurred on after their first win last week and if they keep up their enthusiasm and level of skill they may be a hard match for Nhill Men.
The only possible change on the men’s ladder this week will be if Kaniva Men beat Hurricanes. This would mean a swap over for Kaniva to third and Hurricanes to fourth. Hurricanes suffered a loss to Dimboola last week, giving Dimboola their first win of the season, and might be looking to regain some form they showed the previous week when they beat second-placed Hoops.
Revengers would have to win at least three matches to get ahead of Raiders on the junior ladder for a spot in the finals and this is perhaps unlikely. They did well to claim a draw with second-placed Leopards last week, however, and would do well to keep up the form against Warriors this week.
Bombers play Raiders and although Raiders should have an edge, Bombers have been playing well, last week scoring three goals against Warriors despite ultimately losing the game.
Leopards should have a comfortable game against Kookaburras.
Kangaroos have the bye.

Round 12 Review

Dimboola Men take first win
Dimboola Men have broken the drought with a good 2-1 win over Hurricanes at the weekend in Wimmera hockey’s round twelve. The round at Nhill’s Davis Park had several surprise scorelines, perhaps with the very cool conditions a contributing factor.
A predominantly young Dimboola side’s best result so far this season had been one draw. Each week they work hard and use good pace from young and fast players while building on their strengths and teamwork. They are always a hard match for any opposition, just lacking in some experience resulting in a shortage of goals.
On Saturday both Dimboola and Horsham played good open hockey, with each side propped up by several juniors. Dimboola made the most of their chances with Basil Jorgensen pushing the ball passed the goalie. Tim Jorgensen played well all half. In a very even second half both sides continued to play hard fast hockey. Nathan Jorgensen scored for Dimboola off a good short corner while John Heenan scored a field goal for Hurricanes. Tim Jorgensen, Beau Lovett and James Klinge were best for Dimboola, and Lochlan Zordan, Ryan Robson and John Heenan for Hurricanes.
Tigers had a close win over Kaniva Men. Yanac had more attacking options in the first half although the ball spent a lot of time midfield. Kim Croot scored in the second half to give Tigers the 1-0 win. Defenders were best - Luke Reichenbach for Tigers and Damien McKeown for Kaniva.
Hoops and Nhill Men scored a goal each in the first minute and a half which made for an exciting start. Nhill dominated for the next 20 minutes scoring again. Hoops equalised three minutes before the break. Hoops made the only score in the second half to take the game 3-2. Jarrod Knoop scored one goal and was best for Hoops, while David Reichelt was strong in defence for Nhill.
Dimboola Women have ended Highlanders’ winning streak although the Horsham side remains unbeaten after a 0-0 draw. This quality match could be a preview of a final match. On Saturday both teams started fast and hard running the ball well. Highlanders had a lot of play in their half but Dimboola defenders fought hard. Kate Ferrier was strong in the centre for Highlanders. The second half was much the same as the first but Dimboola had some good chances at goal, narrowly missing. The Klinge sisters Jennifer and Elizabeth ran hard all game for Dimboola.
Yanac Women have sneaked into the top four on the women’s ladder after a well-fought 2-1 win over Kaniva, putting Kaniva out of the top four on goal difference. The game was nil-all in the first half with slow play on both sides. Sharon Croot scored early in the second half which lifted both sides to run more and play better hockey. Yanac used good team play which saw Sheree May score another for Yanac before Kaniva’s Kayla Saunderson slammed in a goal from a short corner. Kaniva fought hard and had a few chances but Yanac had answers for everything and the score remained 2-1.
Warrack Women had a solid 4-0 win over Thunderbirds.
Revengers did well claiming a 2-2 draw with top two junior side Leopards.
Kangaroos took until the second half to get ahead of Raiders with two excellent running goals from Nathan Jorgensen. Raiders did not cease trying but the final score of 3-1 to Kangaroos was a just result.
A good fair game saw Warriors score five goals but Bombers found the back of the net in the second half and before long had three goals to their credit. Bradley Alexander, who scored four goals, and Erin Blackwood were best for Warriors, while Monique Schwedes controlled the ball well for Bombers. Warriors won 5-3.
Minkey Competition
The Minkey Competition played on the junior field at Davis Park was heralded a success, with about 68 competitors taking part. A great number of these came from Dimboola although all six clubs were represented. These young players are the future of our association and it is great to see so much support for them.
Eight minkey teams played 12 games over two junior fields, with no finals being played. Organisers said it was an even competition with positive attitude from the minkeys in freezing conditions. The focus was on participation and the kids having fun.
It was also good to see that junior players contributed to and gained experience from umpiring the minkey games.
Each player received a participation pack and the Wimmera association would like to thank several businesses for donating towards the packs: ANZ, Subway, Just Hockey, Magnatts, Hockey Victoria, and Go For Your Life.

Round 12 Preview

Minkey players to take the field
Wimmera Hockey Association’s littlest stars will take to the field this weekend when they play the annual Minkey Competition.
Minkey games will be played on the junior field at Davis Park in Nhill on Saturday while the association’s nine round twelve matches will be played on the main oval.
Over 60 ‘mini-hockey’ players will represent all six clubs in the association including Yanac, Nhill, Kaniva, Warracknabeal, Dimboola and Horsham. Eight teams will compete in two pools, playing 12 round-robin games, each consisting of two nine-minute halves. There will be six players from each team on the field at a time.
Matches will be played starting from 12pm and finishing at approximately 2.30pm.
All participants will receive a ‘goody bag’ including some vouchers from businesses.
Each club will supply umpires giving some junior umpires a chance to develop their skills.
The theme is fun and participation with umpiring not too strict so as to allow the games to flow and the kids to move freely and enjoy, although still gaining some knowledge of rules and experience of match-play.
There will be no finals played at this level, with the focus on participation. This year’s organiser Joanne Wheaton said ‘everyone’s a winner for having a go’.
Not only are these youngsters quite cute and entertaining to watch on the field, they are also the future of this association.
The average age of players is nine with the competition mostly primary school based. The Wimmera association is encouraging young players to join in and have fun. Joanne believes you have to have lots of juniors in order to sustain senior teams in years to come.
Minkey training and playing helps youngsters build confidence, learn some positioning and make friends, as well as have fun.
Most clubs are trying to build on their junior bases by developing minkey programs within their clubs. This annual competition is a good way to come together and practice what they have learned.
In the main arena at Davis Park, on field one from 11am, Warriors will play Bombers.
Thunderbirds play Warrack Women, who will be determined after last week’s loss.
Yanac and Kaniva women will enjoy an even match.
If Hoops are still suffering a shortage of players due to injuries then their match against Nhill Men could be very even.
On field two from 9.30am junior teams Leopards and Revengers have the early start.
Kangaroos and Raiders will do battle.
Top two women’s teams Dimboola Women and Highlanders could have a very interesting match.
Tigers and Kaniva Men will play fast and hard.
Hurricanes have come off a good win last week and will be tough against Dimboola Men.

Round 11 Review

Highlanders win eleventh straight
Horsham Highlanders have won their eleventh straight game comfortably disposing of Warracknabeal Women in their Wimmera hockey round eleven encounter at Yanac.
On lush green fields Highlanders outran their opponents with good pace and fitness, although they missed many scoring opportunities. Goals to Kate Ferrier, Carmel McFarlane and Johanna Tuomisto in the first half set the team up for the win. The reigning premiers fought back in the second and kept Horsham scoreless. But the damage was already done and Highlanders won 3-0. Ferrier, Robyn Creek and Ellie Morrow were instrumental in the win, while Joanne Lawson, goalie Kate Perkins and Julia Hausler were strong for Warrack.
Yanac Women secured their first win of the season in a close game against Thunderbirds. The Yanac side claimed the four points the last time the two teams were set to meet after Thunderbirds forfeited. On Saturday the first half saw equal chances for both sides and play was mostly midfield. Thunderbirds scored the early goal through Christy Marais but Yanac leveled the score soon after. Yanac played a more structured game and used more teamwork as the game continued. Yanac scored in the second half to earn the win 2-1. Sheree May and Sharon Croot scored Yanac’s goals. Best for Yanac were Anne Blackwood, Sarah Coughlan and May. Bridie Kennedy, Grace McLeod and Anna Rowe were top for Thunderbirds.
Kaniva Women frustrated many of Dimboola’s efforts at goal holding the strong side to one goal each half. Elizabeth Klinge scored early with a solid hit from the top of the circle. Jennifer Klinge worked the ball into Dimboola’s attacking circle on many occasions setting up many opportunities. Young Meaghan Pohlner was in the right place to convert from a scramble on the line. Cara Elsom was strong in defence for the victors, who won 2-0. Hannah Bedford was strong for Kaniva.
Hurricanes took advantage of a depleted Hoops side to take a win and equal points on the ladder with them, although just behind on percentage. The Warrack side was missing many players due to injuries and the team could not hold Horsham out. Horsham dominated and deserved the 2-0 victory. Ryan Robson and Richard Kemp were stars for Hurricanes while experienced Simon King and junior Mark Hewitt did their best for Hoops.
Kaniva Men worked hard for a 3-1 win over Dimboola Men. Defender Fergus Meyer scored two goals and was instrumental in the win, and Brett Jewell scored the other for Kaniva, while Dimboola’s Basil Jorgensen scored one back.
Tigers and Nhill Men had good even back and forth play in their match with the difference being Tigers were able to convert off some attacking chances. Jarryd Bendall at centre half and goalie Graeme Jago did well for Nhill. Yanac halfbacks Luke Reichenbach and Matt Kube pushed forward for the 3-0 win.
Warriors have sneaked up to third spot on the junior ladder ahead of Raiders on percentage. Warriors had a strong win 7-3 over Kookaburras.
Jack Janetzki scored three times to give Leopards a solid 3-0 win over Bombers.
Kangaroos beat Revengers 4-0.
Four points to the canteen crew – Yanac is renowned in the association for its five star feasts and homemade treats and held up its reputation for the crowd as they watched and played nine matches on Saturday!

Round 11 Preview

Yanac hosts nine matches for first time this season
Yanac Hockey Club will host all nine Wimmera hockey matches for the first time this season. They have hosted matches this season but up until now only on the one field due to lack of rain and field condition. Recent rains will boost the fields and it should be a good playing surface, if not soft under-foot.
Many junior players will be full of confidence and use experience they have gained from their weekend of hockey in Melbourne at the junior country championships last weekend.
On field one from 11am Revengers will come up against the Kangaroos who had an upset loss last week and will be looking to reclaim their form.
Dimboola Women will be looking for a win to help keep their top two place on the ladder when they play Kaniva. Warrack Women, who beat Dimboola last round, are not far behind them and are building on their form as the season wears on. Kaniva are sitting comfortably in fourth place at the moment.
Yanac Women and Thunderbirds should enjoy an even match. Both can be strong defensive teams and this week’s outcome may depend on each team’s lineup.
Hurricanes could level the points with second-placed Hoops if they beat them this round but would still be behind on goal difference. However this would still be a position worth fighting for at this stage of the season.
On field two Warriors and Kookaburras have the early 9.30am start. Warriors claimed the first win over the top Dimboola junior side Kangaroos last round and will play the other Dimboola side Kookaburras this week, looking for a similar outcome.
Bombers will come up against Nhill Leopards who may want to increase their percentage to retain a firm hold on second spot on the junior ladder.
Warrack Women and Highlanders will meet and this will be a good preview for finals time. Warrack will be looking to redeem themselves after the nine-goal deficit they endured in their round one encounter. Highlanders have been strong all season winning ten straight games. Can they take an eleventh straight game or will a strengthening Warrack side end their run?
Kaniva and Dimboola men will enjoy an even match while Tigers should beat Nhill Men. But this is hockey and sometimes it can take only a lapse in concentration of a team or one good deflection and it can turn a game around.
Positions are still well up for grabs in each of the men’s, women’s and junior ladders with seven home and away rounds to go.
There are only two goals separating Leopards, Raiders and Warriors at the moment and with few points separating the second, third and fourth place on the ladder, if they continue as they are then goal difference may be a factor in deciding the top four junior positions. Kangaroos are still top of the junior ladder.
Raiders have the bye this week.

Round 10 Review

Warriors end Kangaroos’ unbeaten run
Warriors have upset top junior side Kangaroos in their Wimmera hockey round ten encounter on Saturday, ending their unbeaten run. Kangaroos had won all their eight matches so far but have finally succumbed to the hard working Yanac side. Warriors, currently in fourth position, scored four goals against the Dimboola side in the win which before this round was as many as Kangaroos had had scored against them in total all season.
Bradley Alexander playing on the wing passed many hard balls across the circle giving Warriors lots of opportunities, scoring once himself. Warriors scored three times in the first half before Kangaroos fought back in the second, but Warriors took the game 4-2. Erin Blackwood and Alex Wheaton also played well for Warriors. Nathan Jorgensen and Josh Lehmann were best for Kangaroos.
Quiet achievers Hurricanes could be a dark horse this season after leveling the score with top team Tigers on Saturday. Hurricanes have been strengthening with each match and if they continue at this rate they could be one to watch come finals time. On Saturday Tigers were out of the blocks early with continued pressure on Horsham. Adam Clohesy was instrumental in Yanac’s attack and scored the first goal. Will Hewitt was busy all day for Horsham, doing his job well at full back. Khyran Demllo leveled the score for Hurricanes in the last two minutes of the half. Play started evenly in the second half but Horsham lifted their game with short succinct passing. Kim Croot picked up his game for more scoring opportunities for Yanac, then Paul Mackereth lifted his Horsham side to make it an exciting second half. Josh Cramer and Matt Kube also shone for Yanac and Richard Kemp for Horsham. The game ended an even 1-1.
Hoops scored in the first half but Dimboola Men came out strong and leveled the score early in the second. Hoops scored two more quick goals for a 3-1 win.
There was even play up and down the field and exceptional teamwork from both Nhill and Kaniva men in their match. Both teams scored in the second half for a 1-1 draw.
Highlanders have continued their unbeaten run winning their tenth game straight, but not without a struggle. Yanac Women’s Sarah Coughlan, goalie Joanne Wheaton and Anne Blackwood defended strongly against Highlanders who had many attacking chances. While Horsham controlled most of the play Yanac did have a couple of chances but were unable to convert. Effective player Ellie Morrow and Ginny Forrest scored for the 2-0 win, while Kate Ferrier was also strong for the team.
Warrack Women have been strengthening all year, ever since their shock 9-0 loss to Highlanders in the first round. On Saturday they proved themselves ever capable with a convincing 4-0 win over top two team Dimboola. With nobody scoring in the first half Warrack came out hard in the second to score four good field goals. Fast reflexes on the pads netted Sue Puls two goals, Alana Argent scored from the top of the circle while Jenny Gaulke claimed the other. Jenna Goad and Joanne Lawson were strong for Warrack while sisters Elizabeth and Jennifer Klinge were strong for Dimboola.
Nhill and Kaniva women played an even game, 0-0. Laura and Rosie Wallis shone for Thunderbirds while youngsters Claire McDonald and Katie Rich shone for Kaniva.
A six-goal haul to Braden Clark and consistent strength from Brady Dixon set junior side Raiders up for a strong win against Bombers. Kendal Meyer also scored. Monique Schwedes was strong for Bombers as was goalie Joanne Ellis, while Andrew Valentine scored two goals back for the team to finish 7-2 to Raiders.
In the other junior match Revengers enjoyed a 3-0 win over Kookaburras.
