Junior teams to represent Wimmera at country championships
The Wimmera Hockey Association will be represented at the Junior Country Week hockey championships once again with a large squad travelling down to Melbourne this weekend.
Games will be played on Saturday 28 June and Sunday 29 June 2008 at several venues in Melbourne including the State Hockey Centre.
All teams will play teams from country areas around the state over the two days of competition.
Many games are played on artificial turf which is great experience and a whole new ball game for our Wimmera players who play on grass fields through our normal season. The game can be a lot faster and often requires different tactics and plays.
Sometimes it can take a few games to get used to the different style of play, which can potentially be a disadvantage to our teams playing against some opposition who are more familiar with the faster synthetic surfaces.
Our association however has been well represented in the past with several teams in recent years being quite competitive and reaching finals.
This year the association is sending 72 players in six teams including: an Under 15 girls team and an Under 17 girls team, an Under 13 boys team, two Under 15 boys teams, and an Under 17 boys team.
All six Wimmera clubs are represented, with a large contingent from Yanac, Kaniva, Dimboola and Nhill, and a few from Warracknabeal and Horsham.
There are some 20 parents and officials going along to support them.
The weekend is a good opportunity to build confidence in players as well as promote inter-club friendships which is beneficial at an association level.
Also, thanks go to Dimboola’s IGA supermarket which is sponsoring these teams supplying fruit and food.

Senior Country Week - Men's Review
Men represent Wimmera hockey at country championships
Despite failing to register a win, the Wimmera Hockey Association’s senior Men’s Team far from disgraced itself in the State Country Hockey Championships held at the Footscray Hockey Centre in Melbourne on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, 7-9 June 2008.
Coming up against much stronger opposition who were more familiar with the faster synthetic surfaces, the team drew one game against Grampians and lost five, with the worst defeat being a hard fought five nil loss to eventual Division premiers West Gippsland. Other pool matches saw losses to Warrnambool and North Central.
The highlight game for the weekend was the early game on Monday morning in an inter-pool game which matched the Wimmera from Division 3 with the top team in Division 2, Albury Wodonga. Despite going down in a credible 2-3 defeat, this was the only occasion for the tournament that any team scored more than one goal against the Division 2 Premiers.
The final game was the play-off game for third and fourth place against North Central who after being held scoreless in the first half had to fight hard to score four goals against a tiring Wimmera team to win the game.
Mathew McDonald was the top goal scorer for the weekend with two, in front of Ryan Booth, Kyle Creek, Darren Grose and Josh Creek with one each. Every player deserves to be included in the best players list as they all effectively fulfilled whatever role in the team they were asked by the coaches.
The success of the team’s participation in the tournament should not be judged by the lack of victories, but by the valuable experience gained by playing at this higher level on the unfamiliar synthetic surfaces and by the ability of players from four different clubs, most of whom had never played together before, to gel as a team right from the start of the first game and to maintain that cohesion over what is quite a demanding three days of hockey.
For only their second attempt at this level in the last twelve seasons, the team gave an excellent account of themselves as players and as representatives of their Association and region.

Wimmera women runners up at hockey country championships
Wimmera’s women have shone at the Senior Country Week women’s championships 2008 coming runners up in the B grade section at Geelong.
The women have represented the Wimmera Hockey Association well in the last two years – a women’s team was premiers in that division last year, 2007.
A second Wimmera women’s team this year were not quite so successful, unfortunately losing all their matches.
The Wimmera’s women’s teams headed down on Friday night by bus driven by Sue Kuhnell to stay at the Barwon Caravan Park.
First games up on Saturday 7 June and Sunday 8 June at 9am and last games at 8pm made for long days.
Monday start time was 10am and finals were at 4.30pm. We arrived home at 12.30am after a celebration dinner at the Skipton Pub on the way home.
Some noteworthy extras for the weekend were: Kylie Ferguson played with Goulburn Valley Vets; Michelle Searle and Claire McDonald played with Goulburn Valley A team where Michelle scored a goal and they won 2-0 against central Vic; and Claire McDonald umpired a game, Vicki Smithyman a few games plus the Vets finals and Michelle Searle umpired a few and also the A Grade Finals.
A big thank you to IGA Dimboola for their kind donation towards the team’s food, Sue Kuhnell for driving the bus and to Lynn Kedwell for being both teams’ manager.
All had a great weekend with no extreme injuries, only a whole lot of bruising and bumps.
Will return next year to keep up the great Wimmera reputation.

Round 10 Preview
First matches at Horsham this season
Horsham Hockey Club will host their first matches at their home field this season, hosting all nine matches in Wimmera hockey’s round ten.
Just over half way through the season’s home and away matches and it seems the top four in each division are nearly set unless there are some upset games.
There have not been any real upsets so far in the draws with teams playing to their strengths consistently and almost predictably.
Kangaroos take on Warriors from 11am on field one. Kangaroos are unbeaten winning all their eight games played this season. They are six points clear of second placed Leopards and should collect another four points when they play Warriors. It was a close 2-1 encounter in Kangaroos’ favour when they last played in round three with Warriors defending well and keeping the score low. Warriors can score against Kangaroos though, and it should be a good match.
Dimboola Women will have a good match against Warrack Women. Dimboola are proving themselves a tough to beat side this year, losing only twice out of nine games. They play Warrack who are their nearest chance to knock them out of the top two, and will do their best to retain the double chance in finals. Warrack are the quiet achievers this year and always seem to time it right at finals time. Teams will want to watch out for them making a comeback into top hockey.
The biggest chance for a change is in the women’s top four. If Yanac Women won a couple of games soon they might be a chance to make finals. It is unlikely to happen this week when they take on Highlanders who have won all of their nine games played this season. Yanac are a good side, however, and might be able to take something away from that game and score some points in their next few games which should see them evenly matched with their opponents including Nhill and Kaniva.
Kaniva has a place in the top four, eight points ahead of Nhill. Nhill will be looking to close the gap a little if they have finals in their sights, while Kaniva will want to hang on and give themselves a good chance to play finals.
Field two games get the early start from 9.30am with juniors Revengers and Kookaburras. Both are unlikely to reach finals and will enjoy a good even match, building on their strengths and team play.
Raiders should keep their third spot on the junior ladder after they meet Bombers.
Thunderbirds will need to make a move shortly if they want a hope to reach finals. Sitting bottom of the ladder two games’ worth of points outside a finals berth they would need to start with a win against Kaniva Women this week. Thunderbirds and Kaniva Women should enjoy an even match but Kaniva may have the advantage.
Dimboola Men will need to be fast. Hoops will be looking for a good result following last week’s loss to top team Tigers. Hoops will need to keep winning matches to retain their spot in the top two.
Hurricanes are only just outside the men’s top two, and will work hard but may not be strong enough for Tigers who seem to be strengthening as the season goes by.

Round 9 Review
Tigers claim a clear lead
Tigers now have a clear lead on the men’s ladder thanks to a 2-0 win over second placed Hoops in round nine of Wimmera hockey action. Tigers and Hoops had shared equal points since round four only separated by goal difference.
At Dimboola, Hoops rarely had the ball in their scoring zone in the first half while goals to Adam Clohesy and Hugh Finlay set Tigers up for the win following excellent passing and team play. Hoops came back strongly in the second and were unlucky not to score. Fitness may have let them down in the end. Simon Farmers and Clohesy were a strength for Tigers while goalie George Nikkelson and junior Ethan Schilling were Hoops’ standouts.
Dimboola Women gave another solid performance dominating Thunderbirds 3-0. Elizabeth Klinge scored one goal, and together with Michelle Searle and Jess Ross led the way for Dimboola. The Nhill side were not without their chances with direction from Grace Mcleod and Rosie Wallis but were thwarted by good goalie work by Rosa Goode.
Junior goalie Ambrose Hose did some top work for Dimboola Men with Ryan Booth at full back also creating a good defence against Nhill. While both sides created scoring chances in the first half, Nhill Men dominated early in the second with many forward thrusts and finally converted through young Jack Janetzki. Dimboola mounted a late burst and were unlucky not to convert from several short corners. Nhill’s Graeme Janetzki at half back and Allan King at full back proved hard to beat. Nhill won 1-0.
Junior side Leopards came out strong defeating Kookaburras 4-0.
Nathan Jorgensen scored three goals and steered Kangaroos to a comfortable 7-0 victory over Bombers. Sean Creek and Monique Schwedes helped Bombers work well together to stop more goals.
At Kaniva, top women’s side Highlanders continued their domination winning their ninth straight game this season, this time with a 6-1 demolition of the home women’s side. Highlanders controlled the game and took advantage of their attacking chances, resulting in a four-goal haul to star Ellie Morrow and two to Robyn Creek. Kaniva’s Claire Riches and Krystal Smith defended well but were unable to stem the flow. Kaniva launched a counter attack resulting in their only goal through Kelsey Webb.
Warracknabeal Women scored in the second half of an even game to beat Yanac a close 1-0.
Hurricanes started with good team work with Stuart Hoffman and Luke Dunn working well. Christian Stimson was on fire for Kaniva in the first half while a free hit outside the circle found teammate Kendal Meyer who deflected and put Kaniva in the lead. Ryan Wallis had a constructive game continually putting Kaniva into attack, although Dunn had a good shot and beat Kaniva’s goalie, sneaking the ball under him to even the score 1-1.
Raiders and Warriors drew 3-3 in a high standard junior game.

Round 9 Preview
Wimmera hockey resumes with split round
Wimmera hockey resumes this Saturday with round nine after a week off last weekend due to Senior Country Week hockey.
Players from all teams will be fresh and keen to get back into the season. Four games will be played at Kaniva, while Dimboola Hockey Club will host their first matches at their home field this season, hosting five matches.
At Kaniva, from 11am Raiders will take on Warriors.
Yanac Women will take on Warracknabeal Women who are starting to make an impression on the competition again. Yanac put up a fight each week and it should be a good viewing match.
Kaniva Women will have a tough match against Highlanders. The home side will face an uphill battle against the unbeaten side but with a good line up have the capacity to make them work for the points.
Kaniva Men will be evenly matched with Hurricanes. Quiet achievers Hurricanes have a chance to match the points of the top two teams if they win.
At Dimboola, home side and unbeaten juniors Kangaroos have the early 9.30am start against Bombers.
Kookaburras take on Leopards.
Dimboola Women will be strong against Thunderbirds.
Top two men’s sides Hoops and Tigers are on equal points and will play hard and fast. Each will work hard for the points to help cement their spot in the top two which come finals time would give them the double chance. At the half way mark in the season it could be anybody with the double chance in the men’s competition. There is not much separating Hurricanes at third spot from a place in the top two and Kaniva not far behind.
Dimboola and Nhill men will be evenly matched and it should be an enjoyable game.
Revengers have the bye.

Senior Country Week Preview
Teams to represent Wimmera at senior hockey championships
Three Wimmera hockey teams will compete at Senior Country Week championships this long weekend.
A men’s team will compete in Melbourne while two women’s teams will compete in Geelong on Saturday and Sunday with finals played on Monday.
For only the second time in the past 12 seasons, a team representing the Wimmera Hockey Association will compete in the Senior Men’s Victorian State Country Championships.
Men’s country week coordinator Simon King said players representing four of the association’s six clubs will compete at the Footscray Hockey Centre on two synthetic grounds, one water based and one sand based. The team will face opponents from East Gippsland, Grampians, North Central and Warrnambool plus one other from Albury Wodonga, Ballarat, Glenelg or Portland for a total of five games with the possibility of up to two finals on the Monday afternoon.
The team last competed in 2006 when it won a couple of games in Division Two, but as the association was unable to muster enough players to compete last year, the team has been drawn to play in Division Three this year. The last time the team competed in Division Three was in 1996 when they fell one game short of making the Grand Final.
The squad includes Ryan Booth, Joshua Halsall, Beau Lovett and James Terry from Dimboola, Steve Grose, Will Hewitt, Stuart Hoffman, Ryan Robson and Lachlan Zordan from Horsham, Mathew McDonald, Fergus Meyer, Reilly Sanders and Ryan Wallis from Kaniva and Simon King, Jarrod Knoop and George Nikkelson from Warracknabeal.
A Wimmera women’s side competed successfully last year winning the B Grade section.

Round 8 Review
Close games in Wimmera hockey
Wimmera hockey’s round eight saw many close games with two draws and several one-goal defeats when players took to the fields at Warracknabeal’s Anzac Park for the first time this season. The two exceptions were convincing wins to Highlanders and Raiders.
Highlanders continued their winning streak with a 4-1 win over Thunderbirds. The McLeods did their best to hold them back with Grace and Jeanette playing best and Bonnie scoring Thunderbirds’ loan goal. Goals spread around four Highlander players did the damage, as well as good passing between Kate Ferrier, Ellie Morrow and Launa Schilling.
Warracknabeal Women scored first blood after working well as a team but Kaniva came back and scored right before the half time whistle. Warrack came out strong and scored first again but Kaniva moved quickly and evened the score 2-2.
Dimboola and Yanac women played a very fast paced and skilful game with both sides finishing off well in the circle. Full backs on both sides lifted in the second half stopping all scoring chances. Michelle Searle continued to work hard and set up many attacks for Dimboola who finished ahead 3-2. Sarah Coughlan shone for Yanac.
Dimboola Men took the game up to the more favoured Yanac Tigers. Ryan Booth and Tim Jorgensen defended well for Dimboola and Beau Lovett pushed the ball forward regularly. Tigers’ Hugh Finlay scored a good goal near half time. Good defence from Tigers’ Matt Kube and Dimboola’s Booth ensured the game remained as at half time, 1-0 to Tigers.
Junior player Ethan Schilling scored to give Hoops a 1-0 win over Kaniva Men.
Hurricanes move up to third spot on the ladder after a narrow 1-0 win over Nhill Men. Nhill had slightly more of the play with Mont Miller playing solidly in the centre but Will Hewitt played strongly in defence repelling many of Nhill’s attempts in the circle. Ryan Robson scored the goal very late in an entertaining match.
Revengers gave Kangaroos a run for their money despite Kangaroos dominating the first half. Revengers displayed good defence led by captain Nakita Langman and held the strong Dimboola side to one goal in the half. Revengers picked up in the second half and inners Marcus Williamson and Ethan Schilling helped the side to plenty of chances to score but with no success. The unbeaten Kangaroos took the game a close 1-0.
Raiders have sneaked up to third spot on the junior ladder following their 10-1 win over Kookaburras. Raiders had a good attacking game, scoring five goals each half, while Kookaburra’s Jamie Guerin capitalised on a break scoring their loan goal in the first half. Kookaburras were defensively very good during short corners.
Many chances were wasted despite good play by both Leopards and Warriors. The Alexander brothers Bradley and Nathan stepped up for Warriors with Bradley scoring one of their goals while Sam Bone scored the other in the 2-2 draw. Sarah Wallis and Ben Smith were skilful and scored for Leopards.

Round 8 Preview
First matches at Warracknabeal for hockey season
Warracknabeal will host its first matches this season with all nine games to be played at Anzac Park in this Saturday’s round eight of Wimmera hockey.
Dry conditions have forced changes of venues for recent rounds but this week the Warracknabeal fields have been cleared for play.
Bright and early from 9.30am home side Revengers will have a tough match against Kangaroos.
Kookaburras goalie Kobi Villis is proving to be a valuable player limiting goal numbers against the inexperienced team. Villis scored best in the team’s defeat last week and will make Raiders goal scorers Braden Clark and Kendal Meyer think about their attack. At the other end, Raiders full back Tim Eastwood has been in top form the last two weeks and will help slow any Kookaburras advance.
Leopards have capable players spanning the length of the field, scoring through different players each week and several players featuring in the best. Warriors have several talented youngsters but this week will rely on the experience of Erin Blackwood and will look to Nathan and Bradley Alexander and Sam Bone to come up with some goals if they are to combat Leopards.
Highlanders are in top form this season, winning all their games so far and considering Thunderbirds’ recent lagging form should be able to keep the run going.
Dimboola Women will be kept busy but should come out in front of Yanac Women, although Sheree May and Sarah Coughlan will work hard against that outcome.
Linley Arnold-Wardle and Jenny Gaulke have been consistent for Warrack pushing into attack and will make life difficult for the Kaniva Women. Kaniva’s Claire McDonald and Claire Riches have been strong in defence and this should be a good game to watch.
Men’s results should be intriguing following last week’s upset losses to the two top teams and it will be interesting to see how the teams rebound. Nhill Men enjoyed a close win over Hoops last week and will face an even matchup with Hurricanes this week.
Kaniva Men will face Hoops this week, who will give them another tough match.
Tigers will be looking to make up for last week’s loss to Kaniva when they play Dimboola Men. The Dimboola side is young and fast, if not as experienced as Tigers.

Warriors have several talented youngsters but this week will rely on the experience of Erin Blackwood and will look to Nathan and Bradley Alexander and Sam Bone to come up with some goals if they are to combat Leopards.
Highlanders are in top form this season, winning all their games so far and considering Thunderbirds’ recent lagging form should be able to keep the run going.
Dimboola Women will be kept busy but should come out in front of Yanac Women, although Sheree May and Sarah Coughlan will work hard against that outcome.
Linley Arnold-Wardle and Jenny Gaulke have been consistent for Warrack pushing into attack and will make life difficult for the Kaniva Women. Kaniva’s Claire McDonald and Claire Riches have been strong in defence and this should be a good game to watch.
Men’s results should be intriguing following last week’s upset losses to the two top teams and it will be interesting to see how the teams rebound. Nhill Men enjoyed a close win over Hoops last week and will face an even matchup with Hurricanes this week.
Kaniva Men will face Hoops this week, who will give them another tough match.
Tigers will be looking to make up for last week’s loss to Kaniva when they play Dimboola Men. The Dimboola side is young and fast, if not as experienced as Tigers.
Junior side Bombers has a bye.

Round 7 Review
Junior players score for the men in Wimmera hockey
Junior players made the difference when Nhill Men played Hoops, scoring five out of the seven goals in the Wimmera hockey round seven match.
Nhill Men scored their first win this season 4-3 with three out of four of their goals being scored by juniors Jack Janetzki and Ben Smith. Janetzki’s father Graeme Janetzki shone for Nhill, also Mont Miller who scored the other goal. Lyndsey Marchment was strong for Hoops, while junior Ethan Schilling scored twice and Jarrod Knoop scored the other. The win all the more satisfying for Nhill against a top two team.
Kaniva Men were also the benefactors of an upset game, with a 1-0 win over top team Tigers. The even game was marred by many dangerous balls that were penalised by several cards. Yanac had failed to capitalise on many short corners, while Kaniva was awarded a penalty stroke which Ryan Wallis converted for the win.
In the other men’s match, Dimboola had a close game with Hurricanes, but the latter stood firm 1-0. A junior player, Sean Creek, scored the winning goal in this match also.
Following losses by the top two men’s sides on Saturday the ladder is much more open, with only four points separating the top four teams.
Highlanders continued their dominance in the women’s competition with a 2-0 win over their nearest competitors. Dimboola started well and good defence prevented more goals, but Horsham passed well to create scoring chances to win the game. Kate Ferrier and Launa Schilling directed play and scored one each, while Elizabeth Klinge was solid for Dimboola.
After repeated short corners Yanac Women failed to convert and Kaniva had a chance to move forward, scoring through a deflection by Samantha Wallis. Natalie Farmers scored early for Yanac in the second half and good play followed by both teams to finish a draw, 1-1.
Sue Puls and Karen Triffitt were on target scoring three and two goals respectively to take Warracknabeal Women to a 5-1 win over Thunderbirds.

Round 7 Preview
Dimboola club host hockey at Nhill
Wimmera hockey’s round seven sees another change of venue with all nine matches to be played at Nhill College. Dimboola club will host the day.
Sitting a close second and third on the junior ladder Leopards and Raiders should give the 9.30am early bird crowd a game worth getting out of bed to see. Leopards are fresh from a bye while Raiders have come from making an exciting comeback scoring three second half goals to draw last week.
Next on field one Kaniva Women will be evenly matched with Yanac Women.
Neither Thunderbirds nor Warrack Women are at their usual force and this should be a good even match. Warrack are strengthening again however and if goal scorers Sue Puls and Karen Triffitt are on target they might just have the upper hand.
Hoops will be full of confidence after a six-goal victory last week, but if Allan King is at his usual strength in defence and Jarryd Bendall pushes into attack then Nhill could make life difficult for them.
In the late match on field one Kaniva Men will have another tough match against Tigers. This was a fast match last meet and could be again if the field holds up after four other matches and recent welcome rains.
When the two Dimboola junior teams meet at 11am on field two it will be the first time this season any club will have had teams compete in the same division. Kangaroos at the top of their ladder are generally more experienced than their club counterparts, Kookaburras, and will have the advantage.
Revengers and Bombers will enjoy an even match, giving two teams on the lower side of the junior ladder a chance to shine.
Highlanders are six points clear on top of the women’s ladder and it looks at this stage of the season that if anyone is going to give the Horsham team a run for their money it might just be the Dimboola side with skilful big hitter Elizabeth Klinge and Jess Ross directing plays, while Kate Ferrier and Ellie Morrow give the tactical playing Highlanders an edge.

Kookaburras score first win in difficult conditions
Kookaburras scored their first win with a handy 2-0 score against Bombers in Wimmera hockey’s round six. In difficult conditions at Kaniva the junior teams were evenly matched although the Kookaburras scored early through Shaymin Villas. The rain eased in the second half and the game improved with Bombers going into attack more often through Sean Creek. With direction from Jamie Guerin Kookaburras’ pressure paid off with a good goal to Ashlee Crowhurst. Monique Schwedes played well in defence for Bombers.
Kaniva and Dimboola women were both affected by the mud and rain and started an even game. Dimboola dominated in the second, and although missing some good opportunities, still scored 4-0.
An undermanned Hurricanes suffered a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Hoops.
Dimboola Men had some forward play but Kaniva Men used good plays to take the ball out of their defensive D. Home side Kaniva had the majority of the play in the second half and took the game 3-0.
At Yanac, Warriors dominated the first half and were up 3-0, but Raiders came back fighting to score four times to Warriors’ once in the second, resulting in a 4-4 draw.
Kangaroos scored another solid win this time over Revengers 6-1. They scored four goals in the first half using their experience and the down hill run, despite cold and damp conditions. Revengers worked hard in defence in the second half keeping the strong Dimboola side to two goals. They had a few good attacking runs of their own but the Kangaroos full backs repelled them.
Other junior side Leopards had the bye.
Yanac Women benefited from a forfeit by Thunderbirds and claimed the four points.

Round 6 Preview
Hockey teams settling into the season
Wimmera Hockey Association’s senior teams have now played each team in their division once and will begin to play each other for a second time starting from this Saturday’s round six.
It will be interesting to see how the results pan out now that players are settling into their teams, and teams are settling into the season. Some teams are beginning to dominate.
There are seven junior teams in the competition so they will have another week of play before they begin ‘reruns’.
Some matches have been moved this week due to one field at Yanac being not quite ready, although all match times will remain the same as scheduled.
Yanac will retain the five matches previously set for play on field 1. The four matches listed for Yanac’s field 2 will be played at Kaniva.
At Yanac, home team Warriors start the day at 9.30am when they play Raiders.
Kangaroos play Revengers.
Yanac Women will have a rematch against Thunderbirds. Thunderbirds came out on top last time but with recent form may have to work hard against the home team.
Warrack Women will be hoping for a closer result than the nine-goal difference when they met Highlanders in round one. They may have some work in front of them when they meet the ladder-leading Horsham team again.
The last match for the day at Yanac will see Tigers play Nhill Men. The home team were four goals too strong for the Nhill side last time and may prove too strong again.
At Kaniva, Bombers will play Kookaburras, starting from 11am.

Wimmera Hockey Association’s senior teams have now played each team in their division once and will begin to play each other for a second time starting from this Saturday’s round six.
It will be interesting to see how the results pan out now that players are settling into their teams, and teams are settling into the season. Some teams are beginning to dominate.
There are seven junior teams in the competition so they will have another week of play before they begin ‘reruns’.
Some matches have been moved this week due to one field at Yanac being not quite ready, although all match times will remain the same as scheduled.
Yanac will retain the five matches previously set for play on field 1. The four matches listed for Yanac’s field 2 will be played at Kaniva.
At Yanac, home team Warriors start the day at 9.30am when they play Raiders.
Kangaroos play Revengers.
Yanac Women will have a rematch against Thunderbirds. Thunderbirds came out on top last time but with recent form may have to work hard against the home team.
Warrack Women will be hoping for a closer result than the nine-goal difference when they met Highlanders in round one. They may have some work in front of them when they meet the ladder-leading Horsham team again.
The last match for the day at Yanac will see Tigers play Nhill Men. The home team were four goals too strong for the Nhill side last time and may prove too strong again.

Kaniva move up women’s hockey ladder
Kaniva have snuck up to third spot on the women’s ladder after a 3-0 win over the normally defensively strong Thunderbirds in their Wimmera hockey round five match. A return visit from Mary Kedwell boosted the strengthening Kaniva side.
Men’s, junior and women’s ladders remain otherwise the same after Saturday’s games.
Highlanders strengthened their ladder lead but not without having to work hard. They had the majority of play in the first but only managed one serious shot at goal which narrowly missed. Yanac’s defence in Sarah Coughlan, Anne Blackwood and Jo Wheaton in goals kept the scores at zero each at the break. A more even second half but Highlanders’ Ellie Morrow was able to convert for the 1-0 win.
Dimboola attacked with good team play and Elizabeth Klinge stopped Warrack attacks. Two goals to Adina King set Dimboola up for a well-earned 2-1 win.
Hoops’ Paul Slater scored a text book goal in the first half while Dimboola were boosted by great attacking defence from Beau Lovett. The second half saw lots of clean aggression and great ball skills which made for a great competition and no further goals, Hoops winning a close 1-0.
Mathew McDonald led Kaniva Men to dominate the first half, also scoring one of their three past Nhill’s normally strong defence. Nhill came back hard in the second with half backs and forwards working well together enabling Mont Miller to score two goals quite close together. Kaniva rallied and held the game to win 3-2.

Junior games saw Raiders dominate Bombers 6-0. Bombers’ defence held well under great pressure but Raiders’ confidence built with each goal.

Round 5 Preview
Highlanders keen to keep winning
Highlanders will look to continue their winning streak when they play Yanac Women this Saturday at Nhill College. The venue has changed for another week, although Horsham will ‘host’ the day for this week’s round five of Wimmera hockey.
It will be a case of the top team playing bottom team, but still not necessarily an easy match. Yanac uses good set plays and Sheree May and Anne Blackwood are always hard to pass. Highlanders’ Ellie Morrow is a good director of play with Kate Ferrier and Launa Schilling working the ball hard also. Carmel McFarlane has scored at least once in each match this season and will need to be watched.
Other women’s matches will see Thunderbirds play Kaniva Women and Dimboola Women play Warrack Women. Dimboola will be keen for another win after drawing last week with Nhill, and especially to keep their second spot on the ladder and edge away from Warrack who are only two points behind, if they can.
Tigers will have a fast match against Hurricanes in the men’s competition. Two of the top three teams should provide some good match viewing and it will be interesting to see how Hurricanes, who have been quietly moving up the ladder, perform. This game will be a test for Hurricanes, sitting in third spot on the ladder after three close wins.
Nhill and Kaniva men’s teams are gaining strength and are both proving they are no easy competition, giving the ladder leading teams hard matches each week. This should be an even match with plenty of chances at goal each way.
Hoops may dominate Dimboola Men but will be aware of the young team’s speed and skill. Tim Jorgensen and Beau Lovett will show Hoops the team will not go down without a fight.

Round 4 Review
Highlanders remain undefeated in Wimmera hockey
Highlanders remain undefeated following a 2-0 victory over Kaniva Women in Wimmera hockey’s round four of competition on Saturday. Matches were all moved to Nhill’s Davis Park due to dry conditions at Horsham fields. Kaniva put up a good fight despite barely fielding a team, with Donna Meyer in goals slowing the flow of Highlander attacks. Ellie Morrow shone for Highlanders, with goals to the talents of Kate Ferrier and Carmel McFarlane.
Yanac Women went goal for goal in the first 10 minutes but then with great short passing Warracknabeal managed their fourth goal by half time. A more even and desperate second half saw Yanac score another, with Warrack still victors 4-2.
Thunderbirds and Dimboola Women played an even contest, finishing 1-1. Nhill’s Holly Kennedy at centre was a good match for Dimboola’s centre half Elizabeth Klinge.
Dimboola Men have points on the board after their match with Nhill Men. Dimboola scored first through Ryan Booth, but Nhill’s Adrian Creek equalised late in the first half with a well-constructed goal, and the game finished a draw, 1-1.
Kaniva Men attacked from the start directed by captain Mathew McDonald and created many opportunities but were kept out by good defence by Hurricanes’ Richard Kemp and goalie Steve Grose. Ryan Robson scored against the run of play in the second to take the Horsham side to victory 1-0.
Paul Slater captained Hoops to a solid 4-2 win, ending Tigers’ unbeaten run. Simon Farmers was strong for Tigers.
Kangaroos continued their winning streak by defeating Leopards in a close contest. Both sides displayed good skills. Nathan Jorgensen scored twice for Kangaroos late in the first half following good forward play. Ben Smith scored one back for Leopards after some excellent work in the second, finishing 2-1.
Alexander brothers Bradley and Nathan scored four and three goals respectively to help Warriors to an 8-0 win over Bombers.
Revengers had their first win this season with a 2-0 win over Kookaburras.The Rules Session held midday at the Nhill Sporting Club was hailed a success by association executive. A time change of games allowed good numbers to attend.

Wimmera hockey’s nine matches will be moved to Nhill’s Davis Park this weekend, due to dry conditions still at Horsham fields.
The times of all round four games have also been altered to accommodate a Rules Session to be held in the middle part of the day. Scheduled matches will be altered by half an hour each – some earlier and some later.
Regional Umpires Coach for Hockey Victoria Charlie Martin will be in attendance for the session, as well as during the day for umpire instruction.
The hockey association would like to emphasise the importance of such sessions for the future of country hockey, and have altered the game times so there will be no matches being played at the time of the session, so that everyone is free to attend. Everyone including players, umpires, coaches, parents and interested parties are strongly encouraged to attend.
The session will run for an hour from 12 noon at the Nhill sporting club venue.

Round 3 Review
Third round brings cooler day for hockey
Kaniva and Yanac provided the venues for Wimmera hockey’s round three on a cooler Saturday this week.
At Kaniva, Revengers rallied despite a couple of first half injuries which saw two teammates leave the field for the remainder, but Raiders eventually got on top and scored late in the game to win a close 1-0.
Kaniva Women built some good momentum through Hannah Bedford and the team managed their first goals this season. Warrack’s Linley Arnold-Wardle pushed from their centre half and both sides used good passing. Kaniva gained a high percentage of possession for a satisfying 4-1 victory.
Hoops and Kaniva Men played evenly but Kaniva converted their chances better. The second half was fast and rough with two yellow cards issued. Hoops clawed back to finish the match at 2-2.
Hurricanes had enough players to fill spots on the field while Nhill Men used some juniors in what must have been a tiring match, with Hurricanes getting the edge 3-2.
At Yanac, unbeaten Kangaroos got an early jump on Warriors but Erin Blackwood pushed her team forward and they scored. Nathan Jorgensen in his own role at centre half steered his team to a second goal for a close win, 2-1.
Bombers defended strongly but were hindered from missing some chances to score. A strong performance from centre half Ben Smith including two goals sealed the 7-1 win for Leopards.
Kookaburras had the bye.

Split venues for hockey matches this weekend
Wimmera hockey will have its first divided venue matches this season with games to be played at Kaniva and Yanac for round three action this Saturday.
The first of four matches at Kaniva will see Raiders working hard to take the points from Revengers.
Good turf conditions allow for fast paced games and could test player fitness levels.
Warrack Women will look to continue their improve when they play Kaniva Women. Claire Riches and Jacci Rabone will be busy in Kaniva’s defence to keep several mid-field movers and capable scorers at bay.
Kaniva Men will need to display the strengths they showed last week against top team Tigers when they take on Hoops. Hoops and Kaniva had a sterling preliminary finals showdown last season with Hoops eventually taking the game out on strokes. They will need to keep a tight reign on Kaniva’s ever-improving line up.
Nhill Men have quickly settled into their returning season and after their sturdy performance against Hoops last week may have the edge on Hurricanes.
Starting from 9.30am at Yanac, Warriors will have a battle on their hands with Kangaroos who are showing early signs of dominance. The home team has handy scorers including Sam Bone who will need to make the most of any opportunities to keep up with Kangaroos.
Leopards will play Bombers who will be fresh from a bye and keen to assert some authority.
Thunderbirds will rely on solid defence in the McLeods in a tight match but Highlanders have plenty of scorers including Carmel McFarlane and Denise Vallance. If Highlanders stick to their game plan like they usually do, they could take the points.
If Yanac Women start how they finished last week they could put on a good show, although Dimboola may have an advantage.

High scoring men’s hockey at Nhill
An intense high scoring game saw Kaniva Men in front of Tigers by a goal at the break in Wimmera hockey’s round two action at Nhill on Saturday. The ball moved quickly from end to end, with few players dominating. Yanac started the second half strongly with Josh Cramer in good position on the wing to put in a couple of excellent goals, four in total. The game continued fast until the end, Tigers working hard for the points, 7-4.
Nhill Men’s defence headed by Allan King were flawless with possibly only one exception resulting in Hoops scoring once before halftime. A late game knee injury saw Nathan Dahlenburg leave the field by ambulance. When play resumed his teammates seized the moment to break through the Warrack backline with Mont Miller evening the score 1-1 in the last five minutes. Simon Bardell shone for Hoops.
Disciplined play by Hurricanes saw them two goals up at the break, with the young Dimboola Men side coming out hard to get two field goals and looked like they might take the game away. However Hurricanes settled back down and scored late in the second to finish 3-2 in front.

Rd 2 Preview - Nhill to host hockey action again
Lush green fields at Nhill College will provide the backdrop for Wimmera hockey’s round two matches this Saturday. Dry conditions have meant some venues are still being prepared for the season, with the Nhill site again the choice venue.

Convincing scorelines in hockey first round
Even play resulting in convincing scorelines was the order of the day as Wimmera Hockey Association hit off for its first round of the 2008 season at Nhill College on Saturday.
Only one match out of nine had a margin of one goal with others reaching up to nine goals.
The juniors got the ball rolling with Warriors using the ball well scoring twice through Sam Bone before half time but Leopards kept in touch with a goal to Grady Janetzki. Leopards equalised not long after the break and by improving their teamwork scored twice more to win 4-2.
The lowest score of the day reflected the evenness of the contest between Bombers and Kangaroos, the latter victors 2-1.
Raiders had good forward runs and scored good team goals winning 6-2, despite capable Kookaburras defence.
Revengers had the bye.
Warracknabeal Women were caught off guard with a lack of fitness compared to Highlanders who dominated and with great team passing were rewarded with a 9-0 win. Kate Ferrier led the attack from centre half, while a breadth in attack resulted in goals shared between six players.
Jess Ross pushed Dimboola Women into attack as they dominated the scoreline against Kaniva Women, despite some counter attack. Michelle Searle chipped in two goals in the 7-0 win and earned a spot in the best – a worthy effort after recently becoming a mum again!
Thunderbirds took advantage of scoring opportunities including from short corners to win 4-1 over Yanac Women.
Kaniva Men made the most of scoring opportunities in an even contest against Dimboola Men, winning 4-0. Patrick White led Kaniva’s campaign with four players scoring, while Tim Jorgensen led Dimboola’s defence.
Hurricanes tried hard and were rewarded with one goal but Hoops were the victors 3-1, with three goals to Shane Langman.

Wimmera Hockey 2008 Hits Off
Wimmera Hockey Association will commence its 2008 season this Saturday with nine hockey matches to be played at Nhill College grounds.
Some of the usual grounds are still suffering from drought conditions, however the Nhill fields should provide comfortable conditions for the first couple of rounds.
The association this year will field 19 teams from six clubs including Nhill, Dimboola, Yanac, Kaniva, Warracknabeal and Horsham.
Junior team numbers have dropped from nine last season to seven this year. Horsham and Nhill have both dropped a junior side.
Junior lineups are always an unknown quantity until a few rounds into the season due to their rotation of losing older and experienced players every year. It can take a few weeks for the ‘new’ teams to gel.
Season action hits off from 9.30am with junior teams Leopards and Warriors the first to take the field. Reigning premiers Leopards will have lost one or two of their top players, and will need to play well against the hard working Warriors.
Kaniva Raiders will take on Dimboola Kookaburras, while Horsham Bombers face last year’s runners up Dimboola Kangaroos. Warracknabeal Revengers have the bye.
Horsham Highlanders will sport a new look uniform this year, dropping the tartan skirts for a colour uniform more in line with their men and junior counterparts. Warrack Women have lost one of their greats in Jenny Ford who left the area at the end of last season, but still always seem to come up with a strong line up. This game will be a grand final rematch for the women, with both Warrack and Highlanders keen to see what strengths their opponents possess this season.
Kaniva and Dimboola’s women’s teams usually have an even match so this should be a nice way to start the season for both.
Nhill Thunderbirds will take on Yanac Women.
The men’s competition sees the return of the Nhill Men which boosts the field to six. This will mean a more consistent draw for the men, with no byes. The Nhill team will play last year’s runners up Yanac Tigers and will need to start fast. It should be a good match for the Nhill camp to see where they stand.
Reigning men’s premiers Warracknabeal Hoops may dominate over Horsham Hurricanes.
Kaniva Men made their debut in the association last year and were playing great hockey by season’s end, making the preliminary finals. They will play the young Dimboola Men who now also have another year of experience playing together. This should see both teams in good stead for the season.

Semi Finals Wrap
The first round of finals for Wimmera Hockey was held in last Saturday, and the match of the day was the qualifying final between Yanac Tigers and Warracknabeal Hoops. From the hit off a large crowd of spectators were captivated by the pace, skill, and intensity of the match. The Hoops held the advantage in the early stages with numerous attacks on goal and were unlucky not to score. Tiger Kim Croot, however, changed the momentum with a bullet that burst through the back of the goal cage, lifting the game to another level. The Hoops answered through Al Crozier a few minutes later and it was 1 all at half time. The second half was very tense with both teams having opportunities. The Tigers having the most, but these were just missing or kept out through the defence of Steve Laverty and Nathan Kent. With the game locked at one all and nearing full time, the Hoops lost key player maker Cameron Bardell, who received a yellow card. This may have been telling, because with less than a minute remaining Kim Croot struck again and the game was over. The Tigers team play and their amazing ability to play out the whole game were again major factors in deciding the outcome.
The Hoops will now play Kaniva men next week in the preliminary final. Kaniva, who are in their first season in the competition, eliminated Horsham Hurricanes 1 nil. From the outset Kaniva were the more determined team, winning most one-on-one contests. It is remarkable the progress they have made this year. Mat McDonald was best a field scoring the game’s only goal. Both defences were solid, Alan King and Reily Sanders standouts for Kaniva restricting the number of shots at goal by the Hurricanes to a trickle. Clint Beattie pulled off a remarkable save in the dying moments that would have evened the scores. Steve Grose, Darren Barnett, and Paul Mackareth, as they have been all season, were the Hurricanes best.
Warracknabeal women, who seem to know how to perform when it matters, go straight into yet another grand final with a strong win over Nhill Thunderbirds. An even first half saw the scores nil all at halftime. Warracknabeal, however, gained the upper hand in the second half and won thanks to two goals to Suzanne Puls.
The Thunderbirds will now play the up and coming Horsham Highlanders in the preliminary final. The Highlanders beat Yanac in a game that saw the momentum swing throughout. With only patches of fluent play, it was the Highlanders that looked more likely to score, with Ellie Morrow dangerous up forward. She scored the first goal and set up the second for Louise Lang who was well positioned on the post to tap it in.
The junior’s elimination final between Warracknabeal Revengers and Kaniva Raiders went to double over time. With scores locked at one all and only minutes until the game would have gone to penalty flicks the Revengers scored a second goal and won the match. Nakita Langman and Peter Aitken scored the goals for the Revengers. Jordan Clark scored the Raiders only goal.
The Revengers will now take on the Kangaroos next week in Kaniva. Nhill Leopards defeated the Kangaroos 3 nil. Best for the Leopards were Natalie Jones and Oscar Stephen. Kangaroo defenders Beau Lovett and Ben Gebert where their best.

Round 18 Review
Final four positions were decided on Saturday in Warracknabeal in warm conditions.
Kaniva Raiders secured forth place with a strong performance against the Horsham Black Hawks. The best Raiders were Claire McDonald and Kendal Meyer, with Braden Clark scoring 2 goals. The highlight for the Black Hawks was a great solo goal to Andrew Valentine.
The Raiders victory meant the Nhill Bandits could not make the finals regardless of the result against the Warriors. The Bandits have performed well all season, and it is a shame they had to miss out on finals action. Jarryd Bendall controlled things in the middle as usual and was ably supported by sister Lauren and Ben Smith. The Warriors perhaps played their best game of the season drawing 2 all with the Bandits. Erin Blackwood again very solid in defence. While Alex Wheaton provide attacking and Adam
Horsham Highlanders also secured a finals birth with a convincing victory over second placed Nhill Thunderbirds. The Highlanders running and long passing game was too hot for the Thunderbirds, winning 3 nil.
Kaniva women’s only hope of making the finals was a Highlander loss. Knowing they couldn’t make the finals, Kaniva were very determined to end the season on a high note. Kaniva dominated the first half of their clash against Yanac with accurate passing to forwards from the half backs, resulting in many shots at goal. The second half was more even, but it was Kaniva’s Sharon Williams who scored the only goal from a loose Yanac pass.
Warracknabeal beat Dimboola women 4-2 in the other women’s match to finish the year on top of the ladder.
In the men the Yanac Tigers were impressive coming back from a 2 nil deficit to beat Kaniva 4-2. While the Hoops had too much fire power for Dimboola winning 4-1 and finished the year on top of the ladder.
Kaniva Raiders secured forth place with a strong performance against the Horsham Black Hawks. The best Raiders were Claire McDonald and Kendal Meyer, with Braden Clark scoring 2 goals. The highlight for the Black Hawks was a great solo goal to Andrew Valentine.
The Raiders victory meant the Nhill Bandits could not make the finals regardless of the result against the Warriors. The Bandits have performed well all season, and it is a shame they had to miss out on finals action. Jarryd Bendall controlled things in the middle as usual and was ably supported by sister Lauren and Ben Smith. The Warriors perhaps played their best game of the season drawing 2 all with the Bandits. Erin Blackwood again very solid in defence. While Alex Wheaton provide attacking and Adam
Horsham Highlanders also secured a finals birth with a convincing victory over second placed Nhill Thunderbirds. The Highlanders running and long passing game was too hot for the Thunderbirds, winning 3 nil.
Kaniva women’s only hope of making the finals was a Highlander loss. Knowing they couldn’t make the finals, Kaniva were very determined to end the season on a high note. Kaniva dominated the first half of their clash against Yanac with accurate passing to forwards from the half backs, resulting in many shots at goal. The second half was more even, but it was Kaniva’s Sharon Williams who scored the only goal from a loose Yanac pass.
Warracknabeal beat Dimboola women 4-2 in the other women’s match to finish the year on top of the ladder.

Round 17 Review - Yanac
Hockey returned to Yanac on Saturday. In a great game of end-to-end hockey the Nhill Leopards defeated the Kaniva Raiders 3-1. Brady Newcombe got the Leopards off to a good start with a very skilful goal and it was Leopards 1, Kaniva 0 at half time. The highlights of the half being the long runs into the forward line by Tom Cook and Adrian Creek and the clever play by Sarah Wallis and Natalie Jones that set up the runs.
Early in the second half the Raiders struck back with a goal from Brady Dixon and the game was very much alive. Tom Cook scored 10 minutes in after a great individual effort off a short corner and then scored again giving the Leopards a winning lead. Raiders Mat Wallis goalie made some terrific saves in goals and was ably assisted in defence by Roey Sanders and Tim Eastwood.
In the women’s competition Nhill Thunderbirds consolidated third spot on the ladder with a closely fought 1-nil victory over fifth placed Kaniva. The first half saw several quick runs into attack by the Wallis sisters only to be spoilt by the defensive skills of Claire Ritches for Kaniva. At half time it was nil all. The second half continued much in the same vein; however Laura Wallis managed to score a lucky goal, and Kaniva were unlucky not to score an equaliser at the death from a short corner.
Bottom placed Dimboola women had a 1 – nil victory over second placed Yanac. Again showing the closeness of the women’s competition. Michelle Searle was again very good for Dimboola as were Marli Sallman and Vicki Smithyman, with Adeni King scoring the lone goal. Best for Yanac were Erin and Anne Blackwood and Sarah Coughlan.

It seems now that a draw in the last round will be enough for the Highlanders to hold onto fourth place. They are 2 points and a goal difference of 4 ahead of fifth placed Kaniva.

Round 16 Review
Highlanders continued there good form with a dominant win over Dimboola women in Horsham on Saturday. The Horsham Highlanders have been on the bottom of the ladder for most of the season, but a string of good matches has seen them break into the four.
On a well prepared field the skills of Highlanders Kate Ferrier, Launa Schilling, and Ellie Morrow were on show. Fuyuko Lehman got the Horsham women off to a flier. Awesome teamwork up forward gave the Highlanders a 4 – 1 lead at half time. The second half was closer, but the Highlanders were always going to win through great teamwork. Best for Dimboola were Michelle Searle and Jess Ross.
Kaniva women’s great effort to hold top side Warracknabeal to a draw went unrewarded as they dropped out of the four for first time this year. Warracknabeal had many more shots on goal, but just couldn’t get it through the strong Kaniva defence. Their respective defences have the least goals scored against them this year. Defenders Julie Langman and Jenny Ford were best for Warracknabeal, while Hannah Bedford and Rachel Clark were Kaniva’s best.
The Thunderbirds managed to hold onto third place with a good 2 nil win over second placed Yanac women. Holly Kennedy providing the difference scoring both goals for the Thunderbirds.
In the juniors the Leopards regained top spot with a return to form. The Leopards had many avenues to attack with six different goal scorers and a characteristic tight defence led by the talented Chris Jones in goals against the Kookaburras. Tom Cooke, Natelie Jones, and Oscar Stephen were all in great form for the Leopards.
In a crucial match between two form teams, third placed Revengers and fourth placed Raiders, saw the Revengers come out on top. Revengers dominated winning 3 nil. Ethan Schilling and Nakita Langman led the way for the red hot Revengers. Best for the Raiders were Liam Wallis and Claire McDonald.
Wet weather and a determined Nhill Bandits kept the potent Dimboola Kangaroos attack to just 2 goals. The Kangaroos lost top spot despite winning, their percentage of 571 is just below the Leopards (627). Best for the Kangaroos were Beau Lovett and Kelly Smithyman. While Jack Janetski and Lauren Bendall played well for Nhill.

Round 15 Review
Wimmera Hockey games were played in Warracknabeal on the weekend, with some surprise wins and close matches.
In an upset, up and coming Warracknabeal Revengers scored a win over top side Nhill Leopards. Leopards had been undefeated all year, and it took the determined Revengers to show them up. Ethan and Cassie Schilling were the scorers for the Revengers, whilst the Leopard’s sole goal came from best afield Adrian Creek. The Revengers defence of Simon Bardell and Nakita Langman were the stars of the day, keeping Leopards forwards such as Natalie Jones, Oscar Stephan and Tom Cook away from the action. However, the Leopards defenders Alannah Creek and goalie Chris Jones also played well to stop the fierce Revengers. This was a very even match, with close shots coming from both sides, but in the end it was the Revenger’s day, scoring a much deserved win.

Dimboola were very gutsy in defeat, but Kaniva had the match from the outset.
In the men’s competition, a close match between Tigers and Hurricanes saw the Tigers steal the match through accurate shots and making the most of their opportunities, to win 4-1. The goals were evenly spread within the Tigers team, with the best players being half backs Luke Reichenbach and Mick Dart. Paul Mackereth was the best for the Hurricanes, scoring their goal, whilst defender Richard Kemp was the best at keeping the Tigers hunger at bay. Tigers sit quite comfortably at the top of the men’s table this year and don’t look to be really challenged in the finals.
In the women’s competition, Dimboola women scored a surprise but well deserved win against Kaniva. Jess Ross scored the only goal for Dimboola and was also instrumental throughout the game in setting up many attacking runs. Kaniva had a majority of the play throughout the match, with forwards Claire and Lauren McDonald attacking well, but were unlucky not to score. Hannah Bedford once again played an outstanding game for Kaniva. Dimboola’s backs Michelle Searle and Naomi Kuhnell combined well in the half back line, whilst goalie Cassie Curtis was solid against a threatening Kaniva attack. This win should motivate Dimboola, who are unfortunate to be on the bottom of the ladder.
In another women’s match, Horsham Highlanders were determined in their win over Yanac. The match was played evenly with great passing and teamwork on both sides. Highlander’s Kate Ferrier was a key player and her goal in the early part of the second half boosted the Highlanders. However, Yanac’s Sheree May had a comeback of her own and the teams were once again even. With some encouragement from Robyn Creek and Lorna Schilling, Highlanders continued to fight and Lorna scored to put Highlanders in front. Sarah Coughlan and Anne Blackwood played a fantastic game for Yanac. This is a confidence boosting win for the Highlanders, who could be very dangerous if they make this year’s finals.

In the men’s competition, a close match between Tigers and Hurricanes saw the Tigers steal the match through accurate shots and making the most of their opportunities, to win 4-1. The goals were evenly spread within the Tigers team, with the best players being half backs Luke Reichenbach and Mick Dart. Paul Mackereth was the best for the Hurricanes, scoring their goal, whilst defender Richard Kemp was the best at keeping the Tigers hunger at bay. Tigers sit quite comfortably at the top of the men’s table this year and don’t look to be really challenged in the finals.
In the women’s competition, Dimboola women scored a surprise but well deserved win against Kaniva. Jess Ross scored the only goal for Dimboola and was also instrumental throughout the game in setting up many attacking runs. Kaniva had a majority of the play throughout the match, with forwards Claire and Lauren McDonald attacking well, but were unlucky not to score. Hannah Bedford once again played an outstanding game for Kaniva. Dimboola’s backs Michelle Searle and Naomi Kuhnell combined well in the half back line, whilst goalie Cassie Curtis was solid against a threatening Kaniva attack. This win should motivate Dimboola, who are unfortunate to be on the bottom of the ladder.
In another women’s match, Horsham Highlanders were determined in their win over Yanac. The match was played evenly with great passing and teamwork on both sides. Highlander’s Kate Ferrier was a key player and her goal in the early part of the second half boosted the Highlanders. However, Yanac’s Sheree May had a comeback of her own and the teams were once again even. With some encouragement from Robyn Creek and Lorna Schilling, Highlanders continued to fight and Lorna scored to put Highlanders in front. Sarah Coughlan and Anne Blackwood played a fantastic game for Yanac. This is a confidence boosting win for the Highlanders, who could be very dangerous if they make this year’s finals.

Round 15 Preview - Warracknabeal
All matches are at Warracknabeal this Saturday. The pick of the matches is the Leopards Revengers clash in the junior competition. The Revengers will be looking to make an impact on the powerful Leopards outfit and consolidate a final four position. Tom Cooke and Oscar Stephen are in terrific form and should make things very difficult for the Revengers.
In other junior matches Nathan Jorgensen of the Kangaroos and Kendal Meyer of the Raiders will be keen to add to their already impressive goal tallies.
The Dimboola women probably lost their chance to play finals this year when they lost to the Highlanders, and tomorrow’s game against Kaniva being their absolute last chance. The Highlanders will be hoping for an upset however, and for themselves to beat a strong Yanac team.
The Thunderbirds play an important game against Warracknabeal in the other match which will also have a bearing on the finals.
Maybe it will come down to the last home away match as it did last year to sort out which teams make the finals.
